The qualifications to get an OCONUS job vary widely and depend on the industry in which you work. Contractors with the U.S. military or other federal agencies must have an extensive background in their field and pass a background check. Positions that handle confidential information, such as military intelligence jobs, also require government clearance. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an OCONUS position, you generally need relevant professional experience, cultural awareness, and often security clearance, with a background in fields such as logistics, security, or administration. Familiarity with government systems, specialized software, and compliance standards—along with certifications like DoD clearance or project management credentials—are typically required. Flexibility, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for adapting to diverse environments and overcoming challenges abroad. These competencies ensure successful mission execution, compliance with regulations, and effective collaboration in complex international settings.

Team structures tend to be diverse and multidisciplinary, fostering collaboration but also requiring flexibility and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively in dynamic, international settings.
