The OB Surgical Technician assists the OB/GYN physicians, Certified Nurse Midwives, and RNs in both clinical and clerical duties. The OB Surgical techs perform selected patient care tasks within the Labor and Delivery setting under the supervision of nursing including but not limited to preparing patients and equipment for special obstetrical surgical procedures, assisting the obstetrical surgical team as a scrub during Cesarean Sections and other surgical procedures in Labor and Delivery, maintaining surgical and other equipment and ensuring adequate supply levels for the Labor and Delivery OR at all times.


Position Responsibilities

1.     Prepares Labor and Delivery OR for cases, handles sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment for obstetrical cases, creates and maintains a sterile field.

 2.      Performs as surgical scrub during cases in Labor and Delivery.

 3.      Perform personal care procedures as required to meet the needs and comfort of assigned patients.

 4.      Assist nursing staff in deliveries as directed by nurse: preparation, positioning, transport, transfers and discharge of patients.

5.      Sort, clean, and inspect surgical instruments in accordance with standard procedures and techniques.

 6.      Prepares instruments for transport to Sterile Processing for sterilization and wrapping.

 7.      Stock rooms with supplies, equipment and instruments according to written standard and as requested.

 8.      Obtain and record patient data for medical record: conduct, collect, and deliver routine tests on patient specimens, assist staff with special unit procedures i.e. vacuum delivery.

9.    Communicates with patients, families, and members of the health care team to provide continuity of care and services.

10. Performs other related duties incidental to work or as director by RN/Charge RN.

Attained Level: High School Graduate or GED Program required; Associates degree and/or job specific work experience preferred.
