What does a nurse apprentice do?

As a nurse apprentice, you assist patients with daily living activities like bathing and dressing and perform simple medical procedures, such as changing bandages, removing staples, taking vital signs, administering EKGs, and establishing IVs. Additionally, your duties entail specimen collection, patient transport, changing linens, and helping the patient become familiar with their room and the facility. As your skills develop, you are allowed to administer medications under direct supervision and perform more complex assignments like ostomy care and catheterization. You also have administrative responsibilities, including contributing to care planning, charting vital signs, recording fluid intake and urine output, and participating in staff meetings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nurse apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nurse Apprentice, you need foundational knowledge in basic patient care, medical terminology, and a current enrollment in or completion of a nursing program. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, basic medical equipment, and CPR certification is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help you effectively support registered nurses and interact with patients. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring safe, high-quality patient care while building competencies for future nursing roles.

What are some common challenges nurse apprentices face during their clinical rotations, and how can they be overcome?

Nurse Apprentices often encounter challenges such as adjusting to fast-paced clinical environments, managing multiple patient care tasks, and building confidence in hands-on skills. Balancing coursework with clinical responsibilities can also be demanding. These challenges can be overcome by proactively seeking guidance from experienced nurses, staying organized with time management strategies, and actively participating in team discussions to enhance learning. Open communication with mentors and a willingness to ask questions are key to a successful apprenticeship experience.

The Role
GrizzlyTrek is seeking apprentice welders to join our valued client's team in Red Deer, Alberta. This is a full-time permanent position in a fabrication shop, working Monday to Friday with overtime available. Pay is $23.00 to $35.00 per hour depending on your apprenticeship year and experience, and it moves up as you complete each period.
You will work under journeyman supervision on structural and plate fabrication, building real bead time while your hours are tracked and signed off toward your Red Seal. First through fourth year apprentices are welcome to apply. This is steady indoor shop work with no travel and no rotation, so you are home every night.
What You'll Do
  • Tack, fit, and weld structural steel and plate under journeyman supervision
  • Build hands-on time with FCAW, GMAW (MIG), and SMAW (stick) processes on carbon steel
  • Prepare material: measuring, layout, grinding, bevelling, and cleaning joints for weld out
  • Learn to read shop drawings, weld symbols, and fabrication specifications
  • Operate grinders, plasma and oxy-fuel cutting equipment, and assist with overhead crane picks
  • Complete pre-shift equipment checks, hazard assessments, and safety documentation
  • Keep the work area, tooling, and bays clean, organized, and production ready
What You Bring
  • Registered Alberta welder apprentice (1st through 4th year), or eligible and willing to register
  • Welding school, a pre-employment welding program, or hands-on shop experience
  • Basic ability to run a bead and follow direction from a journeyman
  • Current residence in Red Deer or the immediate area, with reliable transportation to the shop
  • Able to pass a pre-employment alcohol and drug test and meet site safety requirements
  • Physically able to stand, lift, and work in various positions through a full shift
Preferred Qualifications
  • Second year apprenticeship or higher
  • Experience reading shop drawings and blueprints
  • Forklift, overhead crane, or rigging tickets
  • Fall protection, First Aid, or other current safety tickets
Work Environment
  • Indoor fabrication shop, no camp work and no travel rotation
  • Home every night, Monday to Friday schedule
  • Standing, lifting, and working in various positions throughout the shift
  • PPE required at all times, including welding gear, safety boots, and eye protection
What We Offer
  • $23.00 to $35.00 per hour, stated up front, moving up with each apprenticeship period you complete
  • Hours tracked and signed off toward your Red Seal
  • Journeyman mentorship and real bead time, not just clean up
  • Steady year-round shop work with no travel and no rotation
  • Competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications
  • Opportunities for overtime based on operational requirements
  • Life insurance: $100,000 employee / $10,000 spouse / $5,000 per child
  • AD&D insurance with critical illness and cancer coverage
  • Extended health care: drugs, hospital, hearing, orthotics, nursing
  • Paramedical services: chiro, physio, massage, mental health (annual coverage)
  • Vision care: glasses, contacts, laser surgery, and exams
  • Dental care: 80% basic ($2,500), 50% major ($2,500), $2,500 ortho for children
  • Travel insurance: up to $5,000,000 per incident (trips up to 90 days)
