How much do non union film jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 22, 2026, the average yearly pay for non union film in the United States is $48,323.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $45,000.00 and $51,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a non union film?

A non-union film job refers to a position on a film production that is not affiliated with industry unions such as SAG-AFTRA, IATSE, or the DGA. These jobs often provide opportunities for emerging filmmakers, actors, and crew members to gain experience without union restrictions. While non-union projects may offer lower wages and fewer benefits than union productions, they can be more flexible in terms of hiring and work conditions. Many professionals start in non-union projects before joining a union later in their careers.

What are the typical responsibilities and work dynamics on a non union film set?

On a non-union film set, crew members often handle a broader range of responsibilities, which means you may wear multiple hats depending on the project's needs. The work environment tends to be highly collaborative, with team members working closely together to solve challenges quickly and keep the production moving forward. Flexibility is important, as roles and tasks can change throughout the shoot, and longer hours are sometimes required to meet production schedules. This environment can provide valuable hands-on experience and networking opportunities, which can be highly beneficial for career growth in the film industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the non union film position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a non-union film production role, you need a solid understanding of filmmaking processes, industry-standard technical skills in areas such as camera operation, lighting, sound, or post-production, and relevant hands-on experience. Familiarity with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, or professional film cameras and equipment is highly valuable, though formal certifications are less common than a strong demo reel or portfolio. Strong collaboration, adaptability, and effective time management are essential soft skills, especially in fast-paced, resource-constrained environments. These qualities are crucial because non-union films often require team members to take on multiple responsibilities and work efficiently to meet tight deadlines with limited resources.

What is the easiest job to get in the non union film industry?

Entry-level positions such as production assistants are generally the easiest jobs to obtain in the non-union film industry, often requiring minimal experience and offering on-the-job training. These roles typically involve supporting crew members and can serve as a stepping stone to more advanced positions.
