What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Non Union Construction Laborer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Non Union Construction Laborer, you need physical stamina, basic knowledge of construction practices, and familiarity with hand and power tools, often gained through on-the-job experience or a high school diploma. Familiarity with safety protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE), and sometimes OSHA 10 certification is typically required. Dependability, teamwork, and a strong work ethic help individuals stand out on the job site. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring safety, efficiency, and quality workmanship in physically demanding construction environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Non Union Construction Laborers on the job site?

Non Union Construction Laborers often encounter challenges such as adapting to varying work schedules, managing physically demanding tasks, and ensuring safety compliance without the structured support of a union. They may also face job instability or fluctuating workloads depending on project timelines and weather conditions. Additionally, career advancement and on-the-job training may require more self-initiative since formal union-sponsored programs may not be available.

What are Non Union Construction Laborers?

Non union construction laborers are workers in the construction industry who are not members of a labor union. They perform a wide range of physical tasks on building sites, such as preparing and cleaning up jobsites, loading and unloading materials, and assisting other tradespeople. Unlike union laborers, non union workers typically do not have the collective bargaining power to negotiate wages and benefits, but they may have greater flexibility in choosing jobs and negotiating individual terms. Their responsibilities can vary depending on the employer and the specific project requirements.

What jobs pay $2000 a day?

In construction, highly specialized roles such as experienced non-union construction laborers working on large-scale projects or with specialized skills like heavy equipment operation can sometimes earn around $2,000 per day, especially with overtime or project-based pay. These roles often require certifications, extensive experience, and working in demanding environments, but such high daily earnings are relatively rare and typically associated with senior or highly skilled positions.

How much does a non-union laborer make?

A non-union construction laborer typically earns between $15 and $25 per hour, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Entry-level workers may start at lower wages, while experienced laborers with specialized skills can earn higher pay and overtime. Wages may also increase with certifications or additional responsibilities on the job site.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A non-union construction laborer typically does not earn $10,000 a month without specialized skills or overtime. High-paying construction roles often require experience, certifications, or working in high-demand environments, but reaching that income level usually involves advanced skills or supervisory positions rather than entry-level laborer roles.

What percentage of construction workers are non-union?

Non-union construction laborers make up approximately 85% of the construction workforce in the United States. The majority of construction workers are employed in non-union settings, often working on projects that do not require union membership or collective bargaining agreements.

Job description

Project Superintendent — Lead Commercial & Industrial Builds Across the Ohio Valley

Job Overview

Company: Grae-Con Construction, Inc.

Location: Steubenville, OH / Ohio Valley region

Travel: Regional project travel required, typically within the surrounding Ohio Valley market

Employment Type: Full-Time

Salary Range: $90,000–$130,000 annually, based on experience

Additional Compensation: Performance bonus and profit sharing eligibility

Project Types: Commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, government/federal, renovation, ground-up, and union construction projects

Required Licenses / Certifications: None required

Preferred Certifications: OSHA 10 or OSHA 30

The Opportunity

Grae-Con is seeking an experienced Project Superintendent to lead field operations across commercial and industrial construction projects throughout the Ohio Valley region.

This is a strong fit for a superintendent who enjoys running the job in the field, coordinating self-perform crews and subcontractors, solving problems before they affect the schedule, and working on a variety of project types rather than one narrow specialty.

Grae-Con has built its reputation on long-term client relationships, repeat business, and a stable, experienced workforce. Many team members have built decades-long careers with the company, and current openings are tied in part to retirements and long-term succession planning.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Lead daily field operations on commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, government, and renovation projects.
  • Coordinate self-perform crews, subcontractors, vendors, project managers, and client representatives.
  • Maintain jobsite safety, quality, schedule, and production expectations.
  • Review drawings, specifications, schedules, and site conditions to identify issues before they impact progress.
  • Manage day-to-day manpower, materials, equipment, subcontractor activity, and jobsite logistics.
  • Lead toolbox talks, safety coordination, and field communication.
  • Support project managers with schedule updates, field documentation, and issue resolution.
  • Keep projects moving in active, occupied, or phased environments such as schools, hospitals, and industrial facilities.
  • Mentor foremen, assistant superintendents, and field employees as part of Grae-Con’s long-term team culture.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is a hands-on field leader with strong commercial construction experience and the ability to run small-to-mid-sized projects independently.

Grae-Con is especially interested in candidates who have experience with:

  • Commercial general contracting.
  • Self-perform construction environments.
  • Managing both internal craft labor and subcontractors.
  • Projects typically ranging from approximately $3M–$6M, with some larger projects in the $12M–$20M range.
  • Renovations, additions, ground-up construction, and occupied-space projects.
  • Hospitals, schools, industrial buildings, foundations, and pre-engineered metal buildings.
  • Coordinating work in union construction environments.

Required Qualifications

  • 7–10+ years of construction field leadership experience.
  • Superintendent experience in commercial, industrial, institutional, or similar construction environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, schedules, and jobsite documentation.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors, vendors, field crews, and project managers.
  • Strong understanding of jobsite safety, sequencing, scheduling, manpower planning, and quality control.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with owners, project managers, trades, inspectors, and internal teams.
  • Willingness to work across Grae-Con’s regional project footprint in the Ohio Valley.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with self-performing general contractors.
  • Experience managing union craft labor or working in a union construction environment.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30.
  • Background in carpentry, concrete, civil, structural, or commercial building construction.
  • Experience in hospitals, schools, industrial facilities, or occupied renovation work.
  • Ability to be hands-on when appropriate, while still leading the overall job as superintendent.
  • Experience with CPM scheduling, look-ahead schedules, and field production tracking.

Union Environment

Grae-Con operates in a union construction environment.

Union experience is preferred, but it is not required for the Project Superintendent role. The right candidate may come from a union or non-union background, as long as they can successfully lead field operations, coordinate craft labor and subcontractors, and work effectively within Grae-Con’s project structure.

Candidates who have experience working with union trades, managing jurisdictional requirements, or leading self-perform crews will be especially relevant.

Compensation & Benefits

Grae-Con offers a competitive compensation package, including:

  • Annual salary range of $90,000–$130,000, based on experience.
  • Performance bonus eligibility.
  • Profit sharing eligibility.
  • Health benefits, including medical, dental, and vision.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Company-provided tools, technology, or equipment as required for the role.
  • Travel support or per diem for applicable regional assignments.
  • Training and safety development opportunities.

About Grae-Con

Grae-Con is a well-established general contractor serving the Ohio Valley region with commercial, industrial, government, federal, healthcare, education, and self-perform construction services.

The company is known for long-term relationships, repeat clients, and a team-oriented culture where many employees build lasting careers. Grae-Con offers the stability of an established contractor with the variety and responsibility that experienced field leaders value.
