As of Jun 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for non type rated pilot in the United States is $130,916.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $100,000.00 and $155,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Non Type Rated Pilot position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Non Type Rated Pilot, you need a strong foundation in general aviation theory, flight hours in various aircraft, and possession of a valid commercial pilot license (CPL) with multi-engine and instrument ratings. Familiarity with industry-standard avionics, flight planning software, and regulatory compliance is crucial, although specific type endorsements are not yet held. Excellent communication, adaptability, and the ability to work well under pressure help pilots integrate with new equipment and teams. These competencies ensure a smooth transition into airline operations, support safe flights, and make a pilot attractive for future type rating opportunities.

What is a Non Type Rated Pilot job?

A Non Type Rated Pilot job is a position for pilots who hold a commercial pilot license (CPL) but do not yet have a type rating for a specific aircraft. Airlines or operators may hire these pilots with the intention of providing type rating training for their fleet. This allows pilots to gain the necessary certification to operate a specific aircraft model. Such roles are common for entry-level airline positions or for transitioning between different aircraft types.

What is a typical career progression for a Non Type Rated Pilot after joining an airline?

Non Type Rated Pilots often begin by undergoing training and simulator sessions to obtain the needed type rating for the specific aircraft they will operate. Once type-rated, they can advance to First Officer positions and, with experience, may progress to Captain or instructor roles. The initial phase may involve observation flights, ground school, and working closely with experienced crews to build operational familiarity. Many airlines support ongoing professional development and offer mentorship programs to facilitate career advancement. Successfully completing your type rating and demonstrating strong performance can lead to rapid growth and more advanced opportunities within the organization.

About Steel Dynamics

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Steel Dynamics is one of the largest and most diversified domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in the United States, with an estimated steelmaking and coating capacity of approximately 13 million tons, and facilities located throughout the United States and in Mexico. We operate using a circular manufacturing model, producing lower-carbon-emission, quality steel using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology with recycled ferrous scrap as the primary input. Our circular economy is powered by our three primary operating platforms: steel, metals recycling, and steel fabrication. Our steel operations produce steel products, including hot roll, cold roll, and coated sheet steel, structural steel beams and shapes, rail, engineered special-bar-quality steel, cold finished steel, merchant bar products, and specialty steel sections. Our metals recycling operations collect and process ferrous and nonferrous scrap from manufacturing and end-of-life items, such as automobiles, appliances, and machinery. This processed scrap is then sold to end-users for reuse, including our EAF steel mills, which produce new steel from the scrapped material. We sell a meaningful amount of steel to our own steel fabrication operations that in turn produce and sell structural steel joist and deck building systems to consumers.
