Position Overview

The NOC Senior Engineer is responsible for monitoring and maintaining subsea cable systems, optical transmission equipment, performing system troubleshooting, emergency and planned system maintenance, and delivering outage information for major incidents. This position works in conjunction with other members of the support organization and the customer’s technical staff and will work to ensure that subsea cable systems and optical transmission networks are performing as designed and are properly maintained.  The position will also assist in a supportive role, including conference calls, escalations and other tasks to drive incidents towards resolution. The position reports to the NOC Director.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors subsea cable systems for faults and service impacting issues.
  • Monitors optical transmission equipment and optical networks for faults and service impacting issues.
  • Works with NOC IT and customer teams to ensure stability and performance of NOC Cloud infrastructure. 
  • Creates trouble tickets clearly describing issues related to optical transmission equipment and optical networks.
  • Creates customer impact messages describing service impacts for Customer Care and business stakeholders.
  • Escalates existing issues according to NOC procedures and documents tickets accordingly.
  • Supports NOC and business partner communication delivery processes.
  • Works with network, enterprise, and customer facing teams to detect, coordinate, and respond to service impacting issues that require outage notification.
  • Answer inbound telephone calls from a wide variety of client organizations and external groups and provide the necessary support required by the caller.
  • Follows NOC processes related to maintenance, repair and return of parts, security access and Network operational procedures.
  • Enforces all security processes regarding SubCom-owned and customer-owned assets and intellectual property.
  • Assists in the creation of new training and knowledge transfer materials and documentation.
  • Anticipates and champions communication to team, subject matter experts, third party support suppliers, user community and customers.
  • Develops collaborative working relationships with individual contributors including subject matter experts, third party providers, and customers.
  • Identify, research, and develop process improvements and recommend them to management for implementation.

Qualifications

  • Strong communication and comprehension skills required.
  • Intermediate level knowledge of telecommunications networks required.
  • Intermediate level understanding of optical networks, optical transmission equipment, and system testing required.
  • Intermediate level understanding of fiber optic cable terminology, standards, testing, & maintenance required.
  • Strong listening skills, with the ability to recognize and record key data during competing conversations.
  • Ability to correlate causal effects from multiple information and data sources.
  • Able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to balance competing priorities.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft applications, such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Ability to deliver quality written messages which are grammatically correct with coherent content.
  • Ability to convey complex technical issues in layman’s terms.
  • This position operates in a 24x7x365 environment; Shift work may be required.
  • Self-driven person with strong desire to learn.
  • Knowledge of technical writing and the ability to verbally explain complex technical scenarios.
  • Experience with subsea cable systems is desired.
  • Experience with Ciena 6500 and Waveserver nodes is desired.
  • Experience with Nokia PSI-M and PSI-8L nodes is a plus.
  • Experience with Cisco NCS1004 nodes is a plus.
  • Experience with Cloud computing infrastructure is a plus.
