SMC is actively looking for Entry Level Mechanical Engineer/Designer to help execute mechanical design for mission critical projects. Typical project types may include design of greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, design of fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise clients of colocation providers, data center campus planning, conceptual designs and feasibility studies, and various system calculations.
This candidate will execute specific design tasks as part of a broader mechanical team while furthering their own knowledge and developing their skills. The candidate will typically work under the guidance of senior and/or mid-level engineers. The mechanical design scope will be a part of a broader project and therefore this candidate will learn to interface with design leads within SMC (electrical, telecommunications, fire protection, plumbing) as well as externally including architectural, civil, structural, etc.
The ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, is eager to learn, and wants to grow their expertise and career at as rapid a pace as suits them.
This position is open to full time, part time, and internship/co-op applicants.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This candidate will have the opportunity to execute specific mechanical design tasks for various project types while working and coordinating with clients and design leads from all disciplines. This candidate shall have the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and with clients while being able to meet scheduled project deadlines. They will be a self-starter not afraid to do independent research in addition to directly-assigned project work in order to further their career growth.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Utilize Autodesk Revit to produce detailed design documents.
  • Assist with performing airside and hydronic calculations for multiple mechanical systems.
  • Build an understanding and ability to develop hydronic & airflow flow diagrams.
  • Learn how to select and specify HVAC equipment
  • Assist with meeting project deadlines, including working necessary hours to complete major deliverables.
  • Review and gain an understanding of local and national construction codes and project specifications to grow a broader understanding of the construction process.
  • Have experience with the use of Microsoft tools such as Word, Power Point, Excel, and Teams.
  • Have the ability to travel when required to project sites (less than 10% travel).
  • Have the ability to clearly communicate with others in both written and spoken forms.
  • Be willing to take direction from senior and mid-level engineers and designers in order to execute delivery of specific design elements.
  • Be able to work independently while coordinating with senior personnel and other disciplines.
  • Be an active participant in training and mentoring opportunities in order to grow knowledge and capabilities.
  • Maintain excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2 or 4-year degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology preferred, HVAC construction experience with a drafting certification will be considered as well.
  • Past internship, co-op, or work experience in a consulting engineering role is a plus.
  • Experience working in the construction industry is a plus.
  • Experience using Revit in either an educational or professional context is a plus.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is a plus.

COMPENSATION
Base Compensation: $45,000-$150,000 (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to factors such as education, experience, skills and/or location)
