This is a Seasonal Position

$16.50/hr. to $17.25/hr. and a Free YMCA Membership


Under the direction of the Team Leader or Unit Head, the Counselor is responsible for the supervision, programming and safety of campers assigned to their group. Greets everyone by using names whenever possible; extends thanks whenever appropriate; makes relationship building the number one priority at all times. The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Rochester is conveyed.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • With the assistance of a Team Leader or Unit Head, be responsible for the supervision, programming and safety of campers assigned to their group.
  • Ability to lead activities, manage camper behavior, and move group area to area efficiently.
  • Give assistance to the Team Leader or Unit Head with planning, development and implementation of quality camp and unit programming.
  • Assist specialists in presenting their programming to each group, including Arts and Crafts, Outdoor Education etc.
  • Is familiar with and carries out emergency procedures, building rules and regulations.
  • Create a climate in the group that will foster the goals and objectives of the YMCA of Greater Rochester.
  • Attend required trainings, meetings, overnights and family nights.
  • Provide a welcoming, safe, and fun environment for all participants.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Requirements


  • Must be at least 16 years of age and have completed sophomore year of high school.
  • Must have experience and a genuine interest in camp and working with children.
  • Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer required; certifications must be valid/current before the first day of staff training and throughout the duration of your seasonal employment.
  • Must possess values consistent with the mission of the YMCA.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and transport equipment from one location to another.
  • Ability to visibly observe children.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to demonstrate and lead activities.
  • Ability to hear distress signals even when distracted by noise and activity.
  • Ability to reason, solve problems and make sound decisions even when distracted by noise and activity.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme heat and humidity.
  • Observe and promote safety and security procedures.
