Dog Camp Counselor (Part-Time)

Camp Bow Wow Rochester is seeking energetic, dependable, and dog-loving Camp Counselors to join our team.

As a Camp Counselor, you'll play an important role in maintaining a safe, clean, and fun environment for our canine Campers. You'll supervise dog play groups, monitor behavior and health, maintain facility cleanliness, and help ensure every dog has a positive Camp experience.

We are especially seeking candidates who are available for weekend morning shifts and afternoon/evening closing shifts (between the hours of 11:00 AM 7:00 PM).

Applicants must be at least 16 years old. Applicants under 18 must be able to obtain and maintain any required New York State working papers.


Position Summary

Camp Counselors work directly with dogs throughout the day and are responsible for supervising group play, maintaining a safe environment, and assisting with daily facility operations.
This is a physically active position that requires strong attention to detail, excellent observation skills, and the ability to remain calm in a fast-paced environment. Reports To: Team Lead / Management Team


Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and interact with groups of dogs in play yards
  • Monitor dog behavior and ensure safe, appropriate group play
  • Recognize and report signs of illness, injury, stress, or behavioral concerns
  • Clean and sanitize play yards, cabins, equipment, and common areas according to Camp Bow Wow standards
  • Feed dogs and administer medications as trained
  • Assist with enrichment activities and Camper care
  • Support check-in and check-out procedures as needed
  • Follow all Camp safety procedures and operational policies
  • Work cooperatively with fellow team members to maintain a safe and efficient environment
  • Provide friendly and professional service to pet parents

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Applicants under 18 must possess valid New York State working papers if required
  • Comfortable working with dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments
  • Reliable transportation to and from work
  • Reliable smartphone with camera, voice, text, and data capability required for scheduling, training, operational communication, and documenting Camper photos and activities
  • Strong attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and assigned shifts
  • Strong communication skills and ability to follow directions
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Previous dog handling, animal care, customer service, or related experience is helpful but not required

Essential Safety Functions

To maintain the safety of dogs, staff, and customers, Camp Counselors must be able to:

  • Observe and interpret dog body language, behavior, and interactions within group play settings
  • Recognize signs of stress, fear, illness, injury, or escalating behavior in dogs
  • Hear and respond to dog vocalizations, alarms, radios, telephones, and verbal communication from staff and customers
  • Visually monitor multiple dogs and staff members simultaneously in active play environments
  • Quickly identify and respond to safety concerns and emergency situations

Physical & Work Environment

This is a highly active position in a fast-paced dog care environment.

Camp Counselors must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift
  • Work in a loud and active environment with large groups of dogs
  • Safely manage dogs of various sizes, breeds, and energy levels
  • Bend, kneel, squat, reach, push, and pull as needed
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Maintain focus and awareness while supervising multiple dogs at once

Schedule

Part-time position averaging approximately 1230 hours per week.

We are especially interested in candidates available for:

  • Morning shifts (and weekend mornings)
  • Weekday closing shifts (between hours of 11:00 AM 7:00 PM)
  • Holidays and peak boarding periods

Consistent availability during these times is strongly preferred.
