What is a night supervisor?

Night Supervisors are professionals responsible for overseeing operations and staff during nighttime hours in various industries, such as hospitality, healthcare, manufacturing, or security. Their duties typically include ensuring safety and security, managing emergencies, supervising night shift employees, and maintaining smooth operations until the daytime staff arrives. Night Supervisors often act as the primary point of contact for any issues that arise during the night and may also handle administrative tasks or reporting. They play a crucial role in maintaining productivity and safety during non-standard working hours.

What are some common challenges faced by a night supervisor and how can they be managed effectively?

Night Supervisors often encounter challenges such as handling staffing issues, responding to emergencies, and maintaining productivity during off-hours when fewer resources are available. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential for prioritizing tasks and making quick decisions. Building a reliable night team and establishing clear protocols can help ensure smooth operations and a safe work environment. Regular check-ins with day supervisors also aid in addressing any unresolved issues and maintaining continuity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a night supervisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Night Supervisor, you need strong leadership abilities, time management, and prior supervisory experience, often with a high school diploma or higher. Familiarity with scheduling software, incident reporting systems, and basic security protocols is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills help you effectively manage staff and respond to overnight challenges. These skills and qualities ensure smooth operations, safety, and productivity during night shifts when resources and oversight may be limited.

What is the difference between Night Supervisor vs Security Guard?

AspectNight SupervisorSecurity Guard
CredentialsHigh school diploma; sometimes supervisory certificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent; security license often required
Work EnvironmentOvernight shift in facilities, overseeing security staffPatrols and monitors premises, often outdoors or in buildings
Employer & IndustryHospitals, hotels, warehouses, retail storesCommercial, industrial, retail, event venues

The Night Supervisor typically has more responsibilities, including overseeing security staff and managing operations during overnight shifts. Security Guards focus on patrolling and monitoring premises to prevent incidents. Both roles require security credentials, but the supervisor's role involves leadership and coordination, making it more managerial in nature.

Do night supervisor shifts pay well?

Night supervisor positions typically offer higher pay than daytime roles due to the overnight schedule and potential shift differentials. Salaries vary by industry, location, and experience, but they generally reflect the responsibilities and hours worked during less desirable shifts.

Reports To: Fulfillment Center Manager

Location: Milwaukee, WI (On-site)

Employment Type: Full-Time, Salaried, Exempt

About Wantable

At Wantable, we’re redefining retail through personalization. Our membership-based model and proprietary technology empower us to curate products that help customers discover confidence and joy through style.

As a data-driven fashion company, we combine human intuition with algorithmic intelligence to  deliver personalized assortments – balancing creativity, analytics, and operational precision.

We're seeking a hands-on Fulfillment Center Night Shift Manager who owns the end-to-end performance of Wantable’s night shift operations at our Milwaukee Fulfillment Center.

About The Role

The Fulfillment Center Night Shift Manager leads overnight fulfillment operations at Wantable’s Milwaukee Fulfillment Center. This role is accountable for independent shift execution, team leadership, operational decision-making, safety, quality, and cross-shift readiness.

The Fulfillment Center Night Shift Manager will also use data, automation, and AI-enabled tools to optimize labor, reduce errors, improve workflows, and deliver consistent fulfillment performance.

What You'll Do

Night Shift Fulfillment Operations

  • Own end-to-end overnight fulfillment execution across picking, packing, returns, receiving, and inventory activities.
  • Make real-time operational decisions to protect service levels, productivity, accuracy, safety, and cost performance.
  • Adjust labor, priorities, and workflow based on volume, capacity, system insights, and operational constraints.

People Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop supervisors and associates to create accountability, consistency, and strong shift performance.
  • Ensure associates are trained, cross-trained, and capable of executing essential fulfillment tasks accurately and safely.
  • Partner with HR and site leadership on hiring, performance management, employee relations, corrective action, and terminations.

Operational Excellence, Data, and Automation

  • Use KPIs, dashboards, labor planning tools, and system reporting to identify risks, bottlenecks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Leverage automation, AI-enabled tools, and process insights to reduce manual work, improve accuracy, and strengthen overnight execution.
  • Support operational pilots, system upgrades, and process changes during overnight hours.

Safety, Compliance, and Cross-Shift Communication

  • Enforce safety standards and maintain a disciplined, compliant warehouse environment.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and company safety and labor requirements.
  • Ensure accurate shift handoffs by communicating results, risks, staffing updates, and operational priorities to day and second shift leaders.

Additional Functions

  • Other duties as assigned. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice.

Requirements

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent fulfillment, distribution, or warehouse leadership experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of fulfillment, distribution, or warehouse leadership experience, preferably in overnight operations.
  • Experience leading fulfillment, distribution, or warehouse operations with 50+ employees on a shift.

What You'll Bring

  • Strong ownership mindset with sound judgment and comfort making independent, real-time decisions.
  • Data-driven leadership style with the ability to manage people, process, and performance through metrics.
  • Experience improving operations through process improvement, automation, systems adoption, or technology-enabled workflows.
  • Strong communication skills, especially for cross-shift handoffs and leadership alignment.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Working knowledge of applicable safety, labor, and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to work scheduled night-shift hours between 7:00 PM and 5:30 AM.

Physical Requirements

This position requires regular presence and engagement on the fulfillment center floor. The Fulfillment Center Night Shift Manager must be able to perform the essential physical functions of the role, including those regularly performed by fulfillment associates when needed to support operations, training, troubleshooting, or staffing needs.

Responsibilities and physical requirements include:

  • Frequently walking and standing for extended periods throughout the fulfillment center.
  • Regularly bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, crouching, and climbing stairs and ladders.
  • Safely lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials, equipment, and product weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Operating safely in a warehouse environment with moving equipment, conveyors, and varying noise levels.
  • Navigating all areas of the facility, including elevated work areas accessible by ladder.
  • Demonstrating and assisting with fulfillment center tasks, including receiving, picking, packing, inventory management, and returns processing as business needs require.
  • Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and complying with all safety requirements.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

You’ll Thrive Here If You:

  • You enjoy being visible on the floor and leading from the front.
  • You take ownership of problems and focus on practical solutions.
  • You use data to make decisions and are comfortable understanding operational challenges firsthand.
  • You hold high standards while building trust and accountability with teams at all levels.
  • You balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution.
  • You are energized by improving processes, systems, workflows, and labor deployment.
  • You embrace technology, automation, and AI-enabled tools as ways to improve productivity and scale operations.
  • You communicate clearly, provide direct feedback, and create accountability without unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • You remain calm, decisive, and adaptable when priorities shift.

How We Work At Wantable:

  • High ownership. You are trusted to make decisions that directly impact customers and financial performance.
  • Hard-working and hands-on. We move fast, stay scrappy, and focus on impact.
  • Independent thinkers. We value leaders who confidently make data-driven decisions without layers of approvals.
  • Low bureaucracy. We avoid committees, long processes, and unnecessary steps.
  • Love of fashion & product. We combine data with intuition to create experiences customers love.
  • Results over pedigree. What you’ve built matters more than where you’ve been.

Why Wantable?

  • Be part of a dynamic, fast-growing company that has innovation and creativity embedded in its DNA.
  • A chance to shape our customers’ journey and leave a lasting impact on their self-confidence, one order at a time.
