What is a night hospitalist?

A night hospitalist is a physician who specializes in providing care to hospitalized patients during nighttime hours. They manage admissions, oversee acute patient issues, and coordinate with nurses and other healthcare staff to ensure continuity of care overnight. Night hospitalists play a crucial role in patient safety, responding to emergencies and making critical decisions when most other providers are unavailable. This role helps maintain high-quality care around the clock in hospitals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a night hospitalist?

To thrive as a Night Hospitalist, you need board certification in internal medicine or family medicine, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to manage acute medical conditions independently. Familiarity with hospital information systems, electronic medical records (EMRs), and rapid response protocols is essential. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and decision-making skills help in managing overnight admissions and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure high-quality patient care, efficient overnight operations, and timely responses to emergencies in a hospital setting.

What are the main challenges a night hospitalist faces compared to daytime hospitalists?

Night Hospitalists often manage acute issues that arise overnight, which means they must be comfortable making critical decisions with limited immediate support from specialists. They may also face a higher workload due to cross-cover responsibilities and admissions, as well as the challenge of maintaining effective communication with daytime teams to ensure continuity of care. Additionally, adapting to the nocturnal schedule and managing sleep hygiene can be significant adjustments for those new to overnight shifts.

Job description

General Medicine Night Hospitalist

UCSF Division of Hospital Medicine General Medicine Night Hospitalist Position The UCSF Division of Hospital Medicine at UCSF Health is seeking applicants for the general medicine night hospitalist position. Our goal is to provide these new faculty members with clinical experiences that match their career interests. Many faculty in the general medicine night hospitalist position ultimately transition to subspecialty fellowships, while others remain on faculty long-term and transition to clinical or academic hospitalist positions.

Job Details: Position Overview: The Night Hospitalist Service (NHS) provides direct care to patients and supervises the patient care of internal medicine resident physicians overnight. The role offers a dynamic environment with a focus on comprehensive patient management and collaboration with other hospitalists.

Key Responsibilities: NHS hospitalists primarily work at the UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at the Parnassus Heights campus and St. Mary's Hospital. The hospitalists provide clinical care for 12-hour shifts overnight and sign out to the daytime direct care hospitalist teams and resident physician teams in the morning at each of these two sites. NHS hospitalists may also rarely work night shifts at the Mission Bay and Mt. Zion hospitals. Specific roles related to each site are included below.

Parnassus Heights Campus: Four night hospitalists are in-house with designated roles and responsibilities, including: triaging new admissions requests, admitting and cross-covering hospitalized patients, providing Medicine consults to patients on other clinical services, and supervising patients cared for by the Internal Medicine resident physicians at UCSF.

St Mary's Campus: Two night hospitalists are in-house with designated roles and responsibilities, including triaging new admission and transfer requests, admitting and cross-covering hospitalized patients, providing Medicine consults to patients on other clinical services, supporting rapid responses, and directly staffing new admissions by the Internal Medicine resident physicians at St. Mary's.

Mission Bay and Mount Zion Campuses: Hospitalists on night shifts at these campuses have responsibilities related to admitting new patients, cross-covering hospitalized patients, and providing medicine consults to patients on other services, with simplified scope relative to Parnassus Heights and St. Mary's campuses.

To best meet the needs of our broad patient population, trainees, and the city of San Francisco, the Division of Hospital Medicine is seeking applicants who are committed to fostering an equitable and inclusive care and learning environment.

Successful candidates for faculty positions will be graduates of excellent internal medicine programs with strong references.

Candidates for all the above positions must possess an MD or equivalent degree, be board certified/eligible, and be eligible for licensure in the State of California.

If interested, please apply through AP recruit at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF05625 with your letter of interest, CV, and contacts of three references. Applicants are welcome to share information about their journey and mission in medicine in the cover letter. Please indicate if visa sponsorship would be necessary for employment. Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.
