What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) employee, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NHDOT employee, you generally need a background in civil engineering, transportation planning, or construction management, usually with a relevant degree and, for some roles, a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with CAD software, GIS systems, and state/federal transportation regulations is often required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help employees coordinate projects and respond effectively to challenges. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient delivery and maintenance of transportation infrastructure that meets public needs and regulatory standards.

What is NHDOT?

NHDOT stands for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. It is a state government agency responsible for maintaining and improving the transportation infrastructure in New Hampshire, including roads, bridges, airports, and public transit systems. NHDOT oversees construction projects, ensures roadway safety, and works to enhance mobility for residents and visitors. The department also manages transportation planning and coordinates with federal and local agencies for transportation initiatives.

What are some common challenges faced by NH Department of Transportation (NHDOT) employees in project management roles?

NHDOT project managers often navigate challenges such as balancing tight budgets, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, and adhering to strict regulatory requirements. They may oversee projects that require working with local communities, contractors, and government agencies, which can make communication and scheduling complex. Additionally, weather and environmental considerations unique to New Hampshire can impact project timelines. Building strong organizational and problem-solving skills is essential for successfully managing these variables and delivering projects on time and within scope.

  • Provides interdisciplinary technical task management that adheres to project schedule and budget.
  • Leads and supports the design of highways and roads, including development of geometric layout, grading and drainage, utilities, complete streets elements, and environmental permitting in accordance with NHDOT and local New Hampshire standards.
  • Reviews complete project documents for interdisciplinary conformity and quality assurance.
  • Manages the development of technical design and specification documents tailored to NHDOT and New Hampshire municipal requirements.
  • Mentors junior team members by providing guidance to technical staff and reviewing their work for accuracy and conformance with applicable New Hampshire and federal standards.
  • Participates in professional and personal development, including engagement with New Hampshire professional organizations, technical committees, and local industry events.

Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects across different regions of New Hampshire.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with New Hampshire municipal staff, state agency representatives, and the public.
  • Capability to lead and mentor junior staff in a collaborative New Hampshire office environment.
  • Adept at technical task management and oversight.
  • Aptitude for public presentations, including at New Hampshire public meetings, hearings, and local board/committee sessions.

Qualifications

  • BS in Civil Engineering
  • 8โ€“11 years minimum experience in professional transportation engineering.
  • PE required; New Hampshire PE or ability to obtain New Hampshire licensure within a reasonable timeframe preferred.
  • Must have experience with state DOT and/or regional DOTโ€“funded municipal roadway improvement projects; direct experience with NHDOT standards, processes, and funding programs.
