What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) employee, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NHDOT employee, you generally need a background in civil engineering, transportation planning, or construction management, usually with a relevant degree and, for some roles, a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with CAD software, GIS systems, and state/federal transportation regulations is often required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help employees coordinate projects and respond effectively to challenges. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient delivery and maintenance of transportation infrastructure that meets public needs and regulatory standards.

What is NHDOT?

NHDOT stands for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. It is a state government agency responsible for maintaining and improving the transportation infrastructure in New Hampshire, including roads, bridges, airports, and public transit systems. NHDOT oversees construction projects, ensures roadway safety, and works to enhance mobility for residents and visitors. The department also manages transportation planning and coordinates with federal and local agencies for transportation initiatives.

What are some common challenges faced by NH Department of Transportation (NHDOT) employees in project management roles?

NHDOT project managers often navigate challenges such as balancing tight budgets, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, and adhering to strict regulatory requirements. They may oversee projects that require working with local communities, contractors, and government agencies, which can make communication and scheduling complex. Additionally, weather and environmental considerations unique to New Hampshire can impact project timelines. Building strong organizational and problem-solving skills is essential for successfully managing these variables and delivering projects on time and within scope.

Join VHB's New Hampshire Highway team and play a key role in shaping the future of transportation across the Granite State. Our team partners with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, municipalities, and regional agencies to deliver innovative roadway and infrastructure solutions that improve safety, mobility, and community connectivity.

As a Senior Highway/Roadway Project Manager, you will lead the delivery of complex transportation engineering projects across New Hampshire. You'll manage multidisciplinary teams, guide projects from concept through advertising, and partner closely with clients including NHDOT, municipalities, regional planning commissions, and private partners. Your work will directly contribute to roadway improvements, multimodal access, and resilient infrastructure that supports how people live, work, and move throughout the region.

If you're passionate about delivering impactful transportation projects and mentoring talented engineers while working on meaningful infrastructure improvements, you'll find a collaborative and purpose-driven team at VHB.

Responsibilities

  • Manage large, multi-disciplinary highway and roadway reconstruction projects across New Hampshire.
  • Train and mentor junior staff in various aspects of highway and roadway design, with emphasis on NHDOT standards and New Hampshire municipal processes.
  • Assist with the production and delivery of transportation projects from planning and preliminary design through final design and the construction administration phase.
  • Lead pre-design project planning and financial management, including scope, budget, and schedule development for NHDOT and municipal pursuits.
  • Oversee the design of highways and roads, including geometric layout, grading, drainage and stormwater management, coordination with utilities, and environmental permitting in accordance with NHDOT, New Hampshire DES, and local regulations.
  • Lead the development of technical design and specification documents tailored to NHDOT and New Hampshire municipal requirements.
  • Coordinate with NHDOT staff, New Hampshire municipalities, utility companies, and other local stakeholders to advance projects and support successful public involvement processes.

Qualifications

  • BS in Civil Engineering or related field
  • 11+ years of roadway/highway design experience required, with at least 5+ years managing highway or roadway design projects.
  • Current PE in New Hampshire, or PE in another state with the ability to obtain New Hampshire licensure within six months.
  • Experience leading state DOT-funded and/or federally funded municipal roadway improvement projects; direct experience with NHDOT standards, procedures, and funding programs strongly required.
