What is a Direct Support Professional?  Great question! 

A Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides diverse, holistic support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) that have chosen New Hope Community for residential and programmatic supports. As a per-diem DSP you will enjoy flexible hours that work around your schedule.

Ok, so what will I actually be doing every day?

As a DSP, you will be supporting people throughout their daily life. This may include: personal hygiene, dressing, meal preparation, medical appointments, medication administration, and involvement in social and community based activities. Days can be challenging and busy but also be filled with laughter, learning, and special moments!

What characteristics are you looking for in your DSP’s?

A DSP needs to have a positive attitude, have patience, work well with others, and treat others with kindness and respect. A DSP needs to be compassionate and truly care about helping others to have their best life possible. Bottom line, we are looking for people that connect with the incredible value of being a DSP and the difference that role can make for so many.

What certifications or skills do I need to be a DSP?

A DSP must have a High School Diploma, GED or Equivalency, a clean/valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to lift/push/pull 50lbs. No experience is required as we provide excellent, ongoing staff training and development experiences for all our staff to ensure you have the knowledge and skillset necessary to do your job well!
