Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, testing, and development in engineering teamsCreating detailed drawings and models, collaborating with engineers and manufacturing
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, automotive, aerospaceProduct design companies, manufacturing, industrial equipment

In summary, a New Grad Mechanical Engineer typically focuses on engineering analysis and development, while a Mechanical Designer specializes in creating detailed technical drawings and models. Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds and are found in related industries, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a New Grad Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a New Grad Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and basic knowledge of manufacturing processes are typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help new graduates effectively contribute to projects and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills enable new engineers to quickly learn on the job, contribute meaningful solutions, and drive project success in a dynamic engineering environment.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a new grad mechanical engineer expect during their first year on the job?

As a new grad mechanical engineer, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as supporting senior engineers with design calculations, creating and revising CAD drawings, assisting in prototype development, and conducting basic testing or analysis. You’ll likely collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including manufacturing, electrical, and quality engineers, which helps in understanding how your work fits into broader project goals. Many companies also assign new grads to rotational programs or mentorships to help accelerate your learning and exposure to different areas. Being proactive in seeking feedback and volunteering for diverse assignments can help you quickly build both technical and soft skills.

What does a New Grad Mechanical Engineer do?

A New Grad Mechanical Engineer typically assists in designing, developing, and testing mechanical devices and systems under the supervision of more experienced engineers. Their responsibilities may include creating technical drawings, conducting simulations, supporting prototype fabrication, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. They often work on tasks such as improving product designs, analyzing data, and ensuring projects meet safety and quality standards. This role is an entry-level position that provides recent graduates with valuable experience and opportunities for professional growth.

Job description

About the Company

General Matter is enriching uranium in America.

Our goal is to design, build, and operate the world's lowest-cost enrichment services in the United States.

Our mission is to restore America's ability to produce nuclear fuel-fuel that will power AI, advanced manufacturing, critical industries, and the next generation of nuclear reactors.

Ultimately, our work will help power national ambitions and enable a high-energy society.

We were incubated by Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by top-tier investors. Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.

About This Role

As a General Matter Mechanical Engineer, you will design, build, test, and own the mechanisms and mechanical structures enabling enrichment technology. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, software engineers, chemical engineers, manufacturing engineers, nuclear engineers, materials scientists and physicists. If you seek high-impact and are excited by fast-paced, intense, Skunkworks-style projects, we encourage you to reach out to join our team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanisms and mechanical structures for enrichment and own them through the entire product lifecycle including requirements definition, design, development, qualification, and release to production.
  • Support optimization of designs for cost, performance, and manufacturability.
  • Functionally test your hardware through thermal, vibe, shock, durability, etc.
  • Perform root-cause analysis on test failures and develop hardware mitigations.
  • Participate in design review and provide feedback to ensure design objectives are met.
  • Work closely with electrical, software, manufacturing, and nuclear engineers to ensure designs are effectively integrated with overall system requirements.

Basic Qualifications

  • Evidence of exceptional ability (prior projects, portfolio of work, completed products, etc).
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 1+ years of mechanical engineering experience via project team, research, internship, and/or professional experience.
  • Proficient in a 3D CAD package (such as Solidworks, CATIA, NX, etc.) and the ability to make manufacturing drawings using GD&T.
  • Proficiency in finite element analysis (FEA).

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to perform trade studies and make clear recommendations using first principles and engineering fundamentals even with partial information.
  • Experience in a fast-paced engineering environment or a highly technical role requiring a resourceful, entrepreneurial approach to complete tasks within tight timeframes or budget constraints.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.

Equal Opportunity Employer

General Matter is an Equal Opportunity Employer; employment with General Matter is governed on the basis of merit, competence and qualifications and will not be influenced in any manner by race, color, religion, gender, national origin/ethnicity, veteran status, disability status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, mental or physical disability or any other legally protected status.

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this role is $80,000-$95,000 annually.

Compensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities and internal equity. Please note that the stated salary range is an estimate and may be adjusted based on market conditions, business needs, or other factors.
