Schedule: 6:00 am - 7:30 pm, intern assignments scheduled between the hours of Monday - Friday, alternating coverage based on student clinical rotations
Your role with us
The radiation therapist intern position at Salem Health offers a hands-on learning experience in patient-centered care, focusing on the safe and accurate delivery of radiation treatments. Interns will develop essential skills in patient positioning, imaging, and documentation while supporting a collaborative team environment and upholding rigorous radiation safety standards. This role is ideal for a dedicated student eager to gain practical experience and contribute to high-quality patient care.
What you'll do
  • Simulate and administer prescribed radiation treatments, accurately interpreting the treatment plan to ensure proper execution.
  • Consistently and accurately position patients for treatment, construct quality immobilization devices for reproducible positioning and safely transfer patients as needed.
  • Maintain constant audio and visual surveillance of the patient during treatment and image the patient as prescribed by the radiation oncologist.
  • Document all services provided, including daily treatment delivery, patient charges and other relevant information within the Aria system.
  • Perform machine warm-up procedures and daily quality assurance checks as assigned, practicing ALARA principles when imaging patients.
  • Identify and immediately report any equipment malfunctions, deviations from the prescription, or other red flags to a supervisor, engineer, or physicist.
  • Actively participate in daily team huddles and other meetings to promote safe practices and a cooperative work environment.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with peers and supervisors on a continual basis to promote strong team function and a patient-first experience.
  • Offer support to other treatment areas as needed and assume on-call responsibility when scheduled.
Required qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be enrolled in the second of a two-year radiation therapy program accredited by the JRCERT (Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology).
  • Temporary license as a radiation therapist from the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
Additional information
  • Success in this role is supported by practical experience with linear accelerators, particularly Varian Truebeam and Edge systems, as well as GE Lightspeed CT simulators.
  • This position is well-suited for individuals who excel at building connections and communicating with empathy, especially when supporting patients and families navigating challenging health situations.
