How much do neurointensivist jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the neurointensivist position?
To thrive as a Neurointensivist, you need specialized expertise in neurology, critical care medicine, and neuroimaging, typically acquired through medical school, a neurology or neurosurgery residency, and a neurocritical care fellowship. Board certification in neurocritical care and proficiency with advanced brain monitoring technologies and electronic health records are essential. Exceptional teamwork, leadership, and communication skills set outstanding Neurointensivists apart, especially when coordinating care for critically ill patients. These skills and qualifications are crucial for making rapid, complex decisions in high-pressure environments, ensuring the best outcomes for patients with life-threatening neurological conditions.
What is a neurointensivist?
A Neurointensivist is a physician specializing in the care of critically ill patients with life-threatening neurological conditions, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, seizures, and brain hemorrhages. They work in neurocritical care units (NCCUs) and collaborate with neurosurgeons, neurologists, and critical care teams to provide advanced monitoring, medical management, and life support. Their goal is to stabilize patients, prevent further neurological damage, and improve recovery outcomes.
What does a neurointensivist do?
A typical workday for a Neurointensivist involves managing the care of patients with acute neurological injuries or illnesses, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or seizures, in an intensive care unit (ICU) setting. This includes performing daily rounds with a multidisciplinary team, reviewing patient data, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and coordinating complex treatment plans with neurosurgeons, nurses, pharmacists, and other specialists. Neurointensivists often respond to emergencies, provide family consultations, and participate in clinical discussions or teaching sessions. The role is dynamic and collaborative, requiring both hands-on patient care and ongoing communication with the broader healthcare team.

* Assist with recruitment and retention of physicians and APPs; participate in budget planning and capital requests
Working together with Physicians like you:

* For legacy candidates only (through 2026): prior certification via the practice/temporary pathway accepted by the applicable ABMS member board.
* UCNS certification alone is not required; however, prior UCNS accredited fellowship training or UCNS certification may be considered in the context of overall eligibility and experience.
* Minimum 3 years of post-fellowship clinical experience in a dedicated Neurocritical Care or Neuro ICU setting.

* Demonstrated expertise in neuro specific critical care, including advanced ventilator management, multimodality neuromonitoring, continuous EEG, invasive monitoring, and post thrombectomy/SAH care.
* Prior leadership experience (e.g., unit lead, service chief, associate or assistant medical director) strongly preferred.
* Working knowledge of Comprehensive Stroke Center standards, ICU quality metrics, accreditation readiness, and performance improvement initiatives.
* As Neurocritical Care is now an ABMS-recognized subspecialty, candidates must be eligible for or already hold ABMS Neurocritical Care subspecialty certification; fellowship-based eligibility will be required for candidates entering practice after 2026.
