Job description

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Network Engineer is responsible for design, planning, installation, modification, testing, servicing, security and day to day management of the organization's enterprise-wide network, switches, connected devices, and all data communications. This includes the overall health, operations, security, and efficient operation of the network infrastructure. Additionally, the Network Engineer will be responsible for core infrastructure design and implementation using industry best practices. Communicates system change control, disruptive otherwise, through formal change management process. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive data including access, account access, and other forensic information. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.

Job Functions:

  1. Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, manage and upgrade network infrastructure and associated devices.
  2. Troubleshoot network connectivity problems, including monitoring the network for problem, diagnosing problems, and taking the appropriate corrective measures to ensure an expedited resolution.
  3. Ensures network security by proper user accessibility, and being able to reasonably guard against threats to security that will face the network.
  4. Perform preventative maintenance on the network, along with monitoring performance of other local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN).
  5. Receive and respond to incoming requests regarding network operations and/or problems.
  6. Evaluate network to identify issues, assess network health, propose changes, perform impact analysis of proposed changes, and assist with required remediation.
  7. Assist with implementing and supporting network management solutions, and tools, designed to improve our security posture and simplify management complexity.
  8. Perform regular network health assessments to identify, document and address areas for improvement.
  9. Provides after hours (24x7) on call support on a scheduled rotation; General office and hospital environment; moderate levels of stress may occur at times.
  10. Assess network monitoring setup, propose changes to comply with best practices and court requirements, and implement approved changes.
  11. Assist in creating and maintaining network diagrams and documentation to ensure they are current and accurate.
  12. Manage external vendor relations and coordinates all vendor management tasks to ensure enterprise-wide needs for due diligence, risk assessment and continuing vendor monitoring.
  13. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree required or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in network administration required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with Cisco IOS, switches, and firewalls preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, Training:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members and hospital staff.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Knowledge of current and future practices, terminology and principles of networking and information technology.
  • Network systems hardware and software management.
  • Continuity of operations practices relating to local area networks, and connectivity to wide area networks.
  • Customer service practices that are required to meet and exceed end-user expectations.
  • Provide recommendations, develop and maintaindocumentation.
  • Solid theoretical knowledge and hands on experience configuring, troubleshooting, optimizing and managing most of the following hardware/software technologies & protocols.
  • Experience with policies and rules W/ CISCO ISE. Excellent oral and written communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues.
