This position is responsible for the application of network engineering of telecommunications in a local serving exchange environment. This position works as a team member with Network planning, Central Office, and Operations to support the growth, replacements, and upgrades of telecommunications networks. Under the general direction of the Manager of Network Engineering, the Network Engineer will focus on troubleshooting, network design, configuration of equipment and services, research and development of equipment and technology, and customer and internal communications. The network engineer impacts the organization via the health and expansion of the core, aggregation, and access networks that carry commercial and residential data and voice services.The Network Engineer will maintain the current network through upgrades and equipment refreshments, forecast improvement areas, and resolve network issues based on thought and skill-based solutions. This position also supports sales, marketing, operations, and regulatory as needed.

This individual will design the network infrastructure for customers and internal operations. This work includes creating processes to minimize customer impacts, developing standard architecture for network survivability and redundancy, planning network spend to meet budget and designs, and developing Methods of Procedure (MOP) to document network changes and maintenance activities.At times, the Network Engineer will perform overnight maintenance and network restoration work. Additionally, the Network Engineer will be required to make important decisions regularly. Decisions will involve, but are not limited to, meeting team objectives, supporting a new project effectively in the current network, monitoring the impact on customers during outages and network upgrades, and researching best practices to improve and administer the network.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Coordinate and establishes networking environment by installing, configuring, testing, and documenting the equipment/network systems according to the design and specifications.
Responds to work orders and tickets, analyzes, and coordinates and/or resolves reported network problems.
Overseeing research, testing, configuring, installing, and maintaining equipment.
Analyzing known performance issues and leading the process of resolving outages.
Responsible for working with internal groups and external partners in the design, acceptance testing, and production implementation for all infrastructure.
Responsible for assisting with the design, implementation, and supporting broadband access, metro, and core networks.
Prepare written reports and other technical documentation necessary to communicate ideas, concepts, and details necessary to accomplish specific goals.

  • Maintain Voice/VoIP software and hardware (Soft switches, Communications Manager, Voice Gateways, Feature Servers, Application Servers, Media Servers, and IADs, etc.).


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Thorough understanding of various L2/L3 protocols and technologies: TCP/IP (v4 & v6) and related protocols, MPLS-based services, QOS, BFD, LACP, VRRP, STP, etc.
Strong understanding of Internet Protocols and interior/exterior routing protocols (e.g. ISIS, BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, MPLS, Multicast, IPv6 ).
Knowledge of Network Design, DNS, DHCP, IP Managementand ability to do Network Troubleshooting MPLS, OSPF, OTN, ERPS, SIP, BGP, Layer 2, and hardware IP routing
Proficiency with VLAN, VRF, HSRP, Port Security, Traffic Shaping, Priority Queuing, Class of Service (CoS) and possess industry certifications (Calix, Cisco, Ciena, Metaswitch).
An understanding of different cabling types: Multimode fiber, single-mode fiber, LC versus SC.

  • Proven track record working with leading unified collaboration systems like Cisco, Microsoft, Netsapiens, MetaSwitch.
    Knowledge of VOIP protocols such as SIP, RTP/SRTP including TLS Very good knowledge of protocol and packet analysis.
    Excellent written and verbal skills with good project management skills along with excellent documentation skills.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Technical degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent.
3-5 years of service provider network experience.
Experience with MPLS and commercial networks and the various components included.
Network engineering and architecture experience - excellent understanding of Internet and datacenter topologies.
Experience evaluating, configuring, and troubleshooting a variety of network equipment especially Cisco, Calix, Ciena, Metaswitch, and Adtran.
Experience using troubleshooting tools.
Experience working with internet protocols, routing and switching, OTN, GPON, and VOIP.
Experienced in virtualization platforms VMWare and Hyper-V.
