Position Details
The Associate Network Engineer supports the university's network operations by managing tickets, assisting with the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network equipment. Working under the Senior Network Engineer, this role helps ensure reliable wired and wireless connectivity for students, faculty, and staff. Under the direction of the University's Director of IT Operations, the Associate Network Engineer supports the daily operation, maintenance, and enhancement of the university's network infrastructure. This role focuses on customer support, network documentation, configuration assistance, wireless troubleshooting, and monitoring network performance to ensure a reliable and secure campus network.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Monitor and respond to IT support tickets involving network connectivity, wireless performance, and related technical issues, ensuring prompt and professional customer service.
• Install and implement new network hardware as required; assist with configuration, evaluation, and upgrades of core and edge switches.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date network documentation using Visio and standard documentation tools.
• Coordinate inspection and upkeep of network closets, cabling, and related infrastructure.
• Support and maintain internal router and switch configurations, including scheduling firmware and software updates.
• Monitor network performance using network management tools; prepare and analyze traffic and performance reports.
• Assist with installation, support, and troubleshooting of wireless network equipment; report and document areas of degraded service.
• Provide technical troubleshooting and diagnosis of network components; identify issues and recommend corrective actions.
• Coordinate with hardware and software vendors for maintenance, upgrades, and repairs, ensuring proper documentation of activities.
• Support network security initiatives and ensure compliance with established security policies.
• Participate in testing and maintaining disaster recovery plans and procedures.
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in computer science preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
• Minimum of 2 years' experience supporting Cisco network equipment in an enterprise environment.
• Preferred certifications: CCNA, CompTIA Network+, or other relevant networking certifications.
• Participation in on-call rotation; occasional weekend or after-hours work required.
Competencies
• Hands-on experience with Cisco network management tools, Fluke testers, DNA Center, ISE, DNS, and DHCP.
