What are Network Systems Engineers?

Network Systems Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, manage, and maintain computer networks for organizations. They ensure that data communication networks, such as local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets, function efficiently and securely. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting network issues, upgrading hardware and software, and ensuring network security and reliability. Network Systems Engineers work closely with other IT staff to support business operations and may also be involved in planning for future network growth.

How does a Network Systems Engineer typically collaborate with other IT teams during large-scale infrastructure projects?

Network Systems Engineers often work closely with other IT specialists such as system administrators, security analysts, and software developers during large-scale infrastructure projects. Collaboration usually involves designing network architecture, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and ensuring seamless integration between network hardware and software systems. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as these projects may require regular meetings, shared documentation, and coordinated testing phases. This collaborative environment helps ensure that the network infrastructure meets organizational needs for performance, security, and scalability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Network Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Systems Engineer, you need a solid understanding of network protocols, routing and switching, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency in configuring and managing hardware like routers, firewalls, and switches, as well as certifications such as Cisco CCNA/CCNP or CompTIA Network+, are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills set top professionals apart in this field. These abilities are crucial for ensuring reliable network performance, rapid troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration across IT teams.

What do network system engineers do?

Network systems engineers design, implement, and maintain computer networks such as local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets. They troubleshoot network issues, optimize performance, and often work with network security protocols and tools like routers, switches, and firewalls to ensure reliable and secure connectivity.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior network systems engineers with extensive experience, advanced certifications (such as CCIE or CISSP), and expertise in complex network architecture can earn $300,000 or more annually. High-level roles often involve managing large-scale infrastructure, working in specialized industries, or leading enterprise IT teams.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior network systems engineers with extensive experience, advanced certifications (such as CCIE or CISSP), and expertise in complex network infrastructure can reach salaries of $500,000 or more, especially in high-demand industries or senior leadership roles. These positions often involve managing large-scale networks, strategic planning, and working in competitive or high-cost regions.

Are network engineers highly paid?

Network Systems Engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, certifications, and location. They often receive additional benefits and may advance to higher-paying roles such as network architects or IT managers.

What is the difference between Network Systems Engineer vs Network Administrator?

AspectNetwork Systems EngineerNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and troubleshooting network infrastructureManaging and maintaining existing network systems
ResponsibilitiesNetwork architecture, upgrades, and performance optimizationNetwork monitoring, user support, and routine maintenance

Both roles require similar certifications and often work within the same industry environments. However, Network Systems Engineers focus on designing and building network solutions, while Network Administrators handle daily operations and maintenance. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right roles for network development versus management.

ABOUT SLATE
At Slate, we're building safe, reliable vehicles that people can afford, personalize and love-and doing it here in the USA as part of our commitment to reindustrialization. The spirit of DIY and customization runs throughout every element of a Slate, because people should have control over how their trucks look, feel, and represent them.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Slate's Electrical Engineering group is seeking a passionate and dynamic Senior Systems Engineer, Telematics with strong experience in connected vehicle systems, automotive communications, diagnostics, and systems engineering. This position will be responsible for defining and integrating vehicle-side telematics and connectivity solutions across the vehicle architecture, enabling secure communication between cloud platforms, mobile interfaces, and automotive ECUs.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with vehicle communication networks, diagnostics, gateway communications, and connected vehicle architectures using CAN FD, UDS, and telematics communication protocols.
In this position, the candidate will develop vehicle-side telematics system requirements and support the integration, validation, and deployment of a telematics connected vehicle solution from concept to production.
WHAT YOU GET TO DO
  • Develop and maintain vehicle-side telematics requirements involving connected vehicle services, diagnostics, OTA updates, remote vehicle functions, and cloud connectivity.
  • Define communication requirements and interfaces across telematics ECUs, secure gateways, vehicle domain controllers, and automotive networks including CAN FD, LIN, and Ethernet.
  • Develop diagnostic and communication requirements using UDS services, DTC strategies, network management, and secure communication mechanisms.
  • Work cross-functionally with cybersecurity, software, cloud, mobile application, and vehicle systems teams to define end-to-end connected vehicle behaviors and interfaces.
  • Support implementation and validation of telematics features including remote commands, vehicle status reporting, diagnostics access, OTA / FOTA capabilities, and connected services.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to develop interface definitions, communication specifications, DBC files, diagnostics behaviors, and validation plans.
  • Support vehicle integration activities including communication debugging, diagnostic troubleshooting, network analysis, and issue resolution using automotive communication tools.
  • Develop systems engineering artifacts including requirements decomposition, interface control documents, architecture diagrams, diagnostics specifications, and test strategies.
  • Lead technical discussions related to connected vehicle architecture, telematics communication flows, gateway routing, diagnostics access, and future connectivity technologies.
  • Test, verify, and validate telematics and connected vehicle systems using industry standard automotive communication and diagnostics tools.
