How much do network engineering jobs pay per year?

As of May 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for network engineering in the United States is $109,040.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $89,000.00 and $133,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking protocols, network design, troubleshooting, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with routers, switches, firewalls, and certifications like Cisco CCNA/CCNP or CompTIA Network+ are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help network engineers excel in diagnosing issues and collaborating across teams. These skills are critical to ensure reliable, secure, and efficient network operations within an organization.

What are some common challenges network engineers face when managing large-scale enterprise networks?

Network engineers in large-scale enterprise environments often encounter challenges such as maintaining network security across multiple sites, ensuring minimal downtime during upgrades or outages, and troubleshooting complex connectivity issues. Balancing the need for high performance with scalability and cost efficiency can also be demanding. Collaboration with cybersecurity, systems administration, and support teams is essential to address these challenges effectively and to keep the network resilient and efficient.

What is network engineering?

Network engineering is a field of information technology focused on designing, implementing, managing, and maintaining computer networks. Network engineers ensure that data can move efficiently and securely between devices and locations, whether within a single office or across the globe. They work with hardware like routers, switches, and firewalls, as well as software to optimize performance and troubleshoot issues. Network engineers play a critical role in keeping organizations connected and their communications secure.

What is the difference between Network Engineering vs Network Administration?

AspectNetwork EngineeringNetwork Administration
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco Certified Network ProfessionalCCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning, planning, and implementing network solutionsManaging, maintaining, and troubleshooting existing networks
ResponsibilitiesBuilding new networks, optimizing performance, and scaling infrastructureMonitoring network health, configuring devices, and resolving issues

Network engineering focuses on designing and developing network systems, while network administration involves managing and maintaining those networks. Both roles require similar certifications and often work closely within the same industry, but their core functions differ in scope and focus.

Job description

"Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future visa sponsorship."

The Manager of Network Engineering is responsible for the architecture, design, and engineering of enterprise network platforms, ensuring scalability, resiliency, and security across data centers, cloud, and retail environments.

This role is focused on engineering and modernization, not day-to-day operations. A dedicated BPO team manages operational support (P1/P2/P3 incidents, deployments, and run activities), while this role defines the strategy, standards, and future-state architecture of the network.

This leader partners closely with Infrastructure, Security, Cloud, and Application teams to align network capabilities with business and technology strategy.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Architecture (Primary Focus)

  • Lead design and engineering of enterprise network platforms (LAN, WAN, SD-WAN, Data Center, Cloud)
  • Define and execute network architecture roadmap aligned with scalability, resiliency, and security
  • Drive modernization initiatives (segmentation, SD-WAN, hybrid/multi-cloud networking)

Automation & Platform Engineering

  • Drive adoption of network automation using Python, Ansible, and Terraform
  • Establish Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) standards and reusable patterns
  • Reduce operational dependency through automation-first design

Technology Leadership

  • Evaluate, select, and standardize network technologies and vendors
  • Drive adoption of:
    • Observability and telemetry (SRE-aligned monitoring)
    • Zero Trust and micro-segmentation
    • Modern load balancing and cloud-native networking

Standards & Governance

  • Define and enforce network design standards, configurations, and best practices
  • Own architecture reviews and ensure compliance across environments
  • Maintain HLDs, LLDs, diagrams, and runbooks

Reliability & Continuous Improvement

  • Define SLOs and reliability standards for network services
  • Lead RCA reviews and drive systemic fixes (engineering-led improvements)
  • Identify opportunities to improve performance, resiliency, and cost efficiency

Project Delivery

  • Lead key engineering initiatives, including:
    • Data center builds and migrations
    • Cloud connectivity and hybrid networking
    • Network modernization and security enhancements

BPO Partnership (Operational Oversight, Not Ownership)

  • Provide L3/L4 engineering guidance to BPO team as needed
  • Ensure BPO alignment with SLAs, standards, and runbooks
  • Partner to transition engineered solutions into steady-state operations

Vendor & Cost Management

  • Manage telecom providers and technology vendors
  • Support contract evaluations and cost optimization initiatives
  • Drive efficiency and vendor strategy alignment

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with:
    • Security teams (segmentation, compliance, risk)
    • Cloud teams (hybrid/multi-cloud networking)
    • Application teams (performance and scalability)
  • Translating business needs into scalable network solutions

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, IT, or related field
  • 10+ years of network engineering experience
  • 3-5 years in a leadership or management role
  • Strong experience in enterprise and data center networking
  • Experience in large-scale or retail environments

Hands-on Experience

  • Cloud networking (Azure, GCP, OCI)
  • Network automation (Python, Ansible, Terraform)
  • Observability and monitoring platforms
  • Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices
  • Cisco ACI
  • Load balancing (F5, Azure Application Gateway)
  • Hybrid and multi-site enterprise networks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications (Cisco, Palo Alto, Fortinet, Aruba, F5)
