What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Network Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Analyst, you need a solid understanding of networking protocols, network infrastructure, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Wireshark, Cisco IOS, network monitoring systems, and relevant certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set outstanding network analysts apart. These competencies are crucial for efficiently diagnosing network issues, optimizing performance, and ensuring secure, reliable connectivity within organizations.

What are some common challenges faced by network analysts when troubleshooting large-scale networks?

Network analysts often encounter challenges such as identifying the root cause of performance bottlenecks in complex, multi-vendor environments and managing the vast amount of data generated by monitoring tools. Coordinating with other IT teams to address issues that span hardware, software, and security layers is also common. Staying current with evolving network technologies and protocols is crucial, as is maintaining clear documentation to ensure quick response to incidents and minimize downtime.

What is network analysis?

Network analysis is the process of examining, modeling, and interpreting the relationships and interactions within a network, which can include computer systems, social networks, or transportation systems. In the context of computer networks, it involves monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimizing the flow of data to ensure efficient and secure communication. Network analysts use specialized tools to identify bottlenecks, vulnerabilities, and performance issues, allowing organizations to maintain reliable and robust network infrastructure.

What is the difference between Network Analysis vs Network Engineer?

AspectNetwork AnalysisNetwork Engineer
Primary FocusAnalyzing network performance, traffic, and securityDesigning, implementing, and maintaining network infrastructure
Required SkillsNetwork monitoring, troubleshooting, data analysisNetwork design, configuration, hardware/software setup
CertificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentAnalysis labs, security teams, IT departmentsNetwork operations centers, IT departments, infrastructure teams

While both roles involve networking, Network Analysis focuses on evaluating and optimizing existing networks through data analysis, whereas Network Engineers are responsible for building and maintaining network systems. Understanding these differences helps professionals choose the right career path or specialization within the networking industry.

Job description

Job Description
In-Vehicle Network Analysis Tools Engineer
We are the movers of the world and the makers of the future. We get up every day, roll up our sleeves and build a better world -- together. At Ford, we're all a part of something bigger than ourselves. Are you ready to change the way the world moves?
Ford's Electric Vehicles, Digital and Design (EVDD) team is charged with delivering the company's vision of a fully electric transportation future. EVDD is customer-obsessed, entrepreneurial, and data-driven and is dedicated to delivering industry-leading customer experience for electric vehicle buyers and owners. You'll join an agile team of doers pioneering our EV future by working collaboratively, staying focused on only what matters, and delivering excellence
We are seeking an innovative and experienced In-Vehicle Network Analysis Engineer to contribute to our efforts in network performance modeling and analytics. This role is critical for ensuring the scalability and stability of our next-generation vehicle architecture. In this strategic, hands-on role, you will be responsible for turning complex network data into actionable insights. You will develop the tools, define the key metrics, and build the team that will provide the data-driven foundation for all network-related architectural decisions. Your leadership will be key as you work to establish a center of excellence for network analysis, enabling our platforms to evolve with confidence.
Responsibilities
What you'll do...
  • Design and implement scalable and composable software solutions for in-vehicle network bandwidth analysis, message latency tracking, and functional coupling measurement.
  • Research, define, and implement a relevant set of KPIs for network modeling, performance analysis, and change management to proactively identify risks and opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain sophisticated network simulation models to conduct 'what-if' analysis, proactively predicting the impact of new features and architectural changes on bandwidth, latency, and overall performance.
  • Translating complex network analysis results into clear, concise reports and dashboards for architects, feature owners, and executive leadership to guide strategic decisions.
  • Integrate network analysis tools and KPIs into the CI/CD pipeline to provide continuous feedback on the health and performance of the vehicle network throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Work closely with Network Architects and Platform experts to validate architectural choices, assess the impact of new features, and provide data to support optimization efforts.
  • Set the standard for software quality, test-driven development, and agile methodologies within your team to ensure the delivery of robust and maintainable analysis tools.

Qualifications
You'll have...
  • Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Software Developer first. 2+ years of work experience in software engineering, with a focus on data analysis, tool development, or back-end systems
  • 2+ years of experience applying knowledge of network architecture, protocols, and communication standards (Ethernet, CAN, LIN)
  • 2+ years of experience in test-Driven Development (TDD) with Gherkin for writing clear, concise, and executable specifications
  • 2+ years experience in developing analytical tools and defining metrics (KPIs) to measure system performance.
  • 2+ years of experience programming in languages such as Python, C++, or Java.

Even better, you may have...
  • Master's degree in computer engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • 1+ years of experience in Network Analysis and Simulation tools
  • 1+ years of work experience with tools development for Embedded Systems
  • Experience with data science, statistical analysis or machine learning techniques
  • 2+ years of work experience with Autosar Classic and Adaptive architecture and industry standard formats (DBC, ARXML)

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!
As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:
• Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
• Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up child care and more
• Family building benefits including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement, fertility treatments, and more
• Vehicle discount program for employees and family members and management leases
• Tuition assistance
• Established and active employee resource groups
• Paid time off for individual and team community service
• A generous schedule of paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year's Day
• Paid time off and the option to purchase additional vacation time.
