Job description

The Neighborhood Market Food Pantry is designed to provide a dignified, welcoming, grocery-style experience for neighbors facing food insecurity. As a volunteer, you play a vital role in creating an environment where individuals and families feel respected, supported, and empowered while meeting a practical need.

What You’ll Do

Neighborhood Market volunteers serve in a variety of roles before, during, and after market hours, depending on availability and interest. Responsibilities may include:

  • Sorting, inspecting, and stocking food items
  • Setting up and breaking down the market space (tables, signage, supplies)
  • Welcoming neighbors and providing hospitality
  • Assisting neighbors as they shop, explaining options and limits when needed
  • Managing inventory flow and restocking during the market
  • Helping with check-in, crowd flow, or light logistics
  • Cleaning and organizing the space at the close of the market

Time Commitment

  1. Most volunteer shifts range from 5–3 hours
  • Volunteers can serve one-time, occasionally, or on a recurring basis
  • Markets typically occur on a predictable schedule, making it easy to plan ahead

Who This Role Is Great For

  • Individuals who enjoy hands-on service and teamwork
  • Volunteers who value relational, people-centered service
  • Those comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Students, families, small groups, or corporate volunteer teams
  • No prior food pantry experience is required

Skills & Qualities That Help

  • A friendly and welcoming attitude
  • Reliability and willingness to follow guidelines
  • Respect for people of all backgrounds and life experiences
  • Ability to take direction and work as part of a team
  • Flexibility as needs and roles may change during the market

Why This Role Matters

Neighborhood Market volunteers help ensure that food assistance is offered with dignity rather than charity. By creating a respectful shopping experience, volunteers help reduce stigma, build trust, and foster meaningful connections within the community. Often, the simple act of kindness, presence, and consistency makes as much impact as the food itself.

Training & Support

  • Basic orientation and on-site guidance are provided
  • Clear role instructions are given at the start of each shift
  • Staff and experienced volunteers are always available to help

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to serve your community while working alongside others in a supportive, mission-driven environment, volunteering at the Neighborhood Market Food Pantry is a powerful place to start.
