Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and certified NDT Level 2 for Ultrasonic and Magnetic Particle Testing (UT/MT) Inspector to perform non-destructive testing and inspection activities across various projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting comprehensive inspections using multiple NDT methods, ensuring compliance with industry standards, specifications, and safety protocols. This role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in field environments while maintaining the highest quality standards.

Under Socotec Engineering Inc (SEI), the Level II technician will be assigned appropriate non-destructive test equipment for which he is responsible for maintaining. The Level II tech will go to assigned projects and perform required testing. Results will be reported to SEI. Projects will include a diverse range of types including commercial, residential, industrial, and transportation. Projects will be located in the NY Greater Metro Area however some travel may be required. The technician is responsible for maintaining hours and certifications required to perform testing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform non-destructive testing inspections using Level II certified methods including Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT),  and Visual Testing (VT)
  • Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) is optional
  • Conduct field testing and obtain representative samples for laboratory analysis and verification
  • Verify conformance of materials, components, and assemblies to project specifications, codes, and industry standards
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain NDT inspection equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and safety protocols
  • Interpret test results and prepare detailed inspection reports with accurate documentation of findings
  • Review and evaluate inspection data to identify defects, discontinuities, and non-conformances
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and quality control personnel to resolve inspection issues
  • Ensure all inspection activities comply with applicable codes, standards (ASTM, ASME, AWS, etc.), and client requirements
  • Maintain inspection records, certifications, and calibration documentation
  • Participate in pre-inspection planning meetings and provide technical recommendations
  • Train and provide guidance to NDT Level I technicians as needed
  • Work with SEI’s Level III Technician to obtain company certification.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and promote a culture of workplace safety
Qualifications

Certifications (Must Have):

CRITICAL REQUIREMENT: Candidates MUST be Certified Level II UT (Ultrasonic Testing) and MT (Magnetic Particle Testing) technicians. This is a mandatory, non-negotiable requirement.

  • Valid NDT Level II certification in Ultrasonic Testing (UT) - REQUIRED
  • Valid NDT Level II certification in Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) - REQUIRED
  • Valid NDT Level II certification in Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
  • Valid NDT Level II certification in Visual Testing (VT)
  • All certifications must be current and in accordance with SNT-TC-1A, ASNT CP-189, or equivalent standards

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Materials Science, or related technical field preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in NDT inspection roles
  • Demonstrated experience performing inspections in industrial, construction, or manufacturing environments
  • Proven track record of quality inspection documentation and reporting
  • Experience with multiple NDT methods and inspection techniques

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Proficiency in Ultrasonic Testing (UT) - thickness measurement, flaw detection, weld inspection
  • Expertise in Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) - wet/dry methods, fluorescent and visible particle techniques
  • Proficiency in Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) - dye penetrant inspection methods
  • Visual Testing (VT) capabilities - direct visual inspection, remote visual inspection (RVI)
  • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (ASME Section V, ASTM, AWS D1.1, API, etc.)
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and inspection procedures
  • Proficiency with inspection equipment including ultrasonic flaw detectors, magnetic yokes, black lights, and related tools
  • Strong understanding of material properties, welding processes, and fabrication techniques
  • Computer proficiency for inspection documentation and reporting software

ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS (PREFERRED):

  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade II
  • ICC (International Code Council) Special Inspector certifications:
  • Masonry Inspector
  • Steel Construction Inspector
  • Structural Bolting Inspector
  • Structural Welding Inspector
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Certification
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strict adherence to OSHA safety regulations and company safety policies
  • Ability to properly use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including hard hats, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, respirators, and hearing protection
  • Knowledge of hazardous material handling and radiation safety (if applicable)
  • Completion of site-specific safety training as required
  • Ability to work safely in various environments including confined spaces, at heights, and in adverse weather conditions
  • Participation in safety meetings, hazard assessments, and incident reporting

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift and carry inspection equipment up to 50 pounds
  • Capability to work in various positions including standing, kneeling, climbing, and working in confined spaces
  • Willingness to work in indoor and outdoor environments under varying conditions
  • Ability to travel to project sites as required

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Field-based position with potential for exposure to construction sites, manufacturing facilities, and industrial environments
  • May require extended hours, weekend work, or shift work depending on project needs
  • Travel to various project sites throughout the New York metropolitan area, including the five boroughs and Long Island, may be required.
