What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NDT Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NDT Intern, you need a basic understanding of non-destructive testing methods, attention to detail, and a relevant technical or engineering background. Familiarity with NDT equipment, safety protocols, and certifications such as ASNT Level I or II are often required. Strong observational skills, a willingness to learn, and effective teamwork set top candidates apart. These skills are important to ensure accurate inspections, maintain safety standards, and support the integrity of critical structures or components.

What are some typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for an NDT Intern during their internship?

As an NDT Intern, you can expect to participate in hands-on inspection tasks under the supervision of certified technicians. Typical responsibilities include assisting with the preparation and setup of testing equipment, observing various non-destructive testing methods (such as ultrasonic, radiographic, or magnetic particle testing), and helping to document findings. Interns often have opportunities to learn about industry standards, safety protocols, and the importance of accurate data collection. This role provides valuable exposure to teamwork, fieldwork, and the technical aspects of quality control in industries like manufacturing and aerospace.

What are NDT Interns?

NDT Interns are students or recent graduates who work under the supervision of experienced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) professionals to learn and assist with inspecting materials and structures for flaws or defects without causing damage. Their responsibilities typically include assisting with test setups, preparing equipment, collecting data, and learning various NDT methods such as ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing. Internships provide hands-on experience and are a common step toward certification and a career in the NDT industry.

S&ME is seeking an individual passionate about ensuring the structural integrity of steel to join our NDE/NDT team in Lexington, Kentucky, as an NDT/NDE Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and help us provide engineering solutions to our clients.

Visit the Life tab on our LinkedIn profile to learn more about life at S&ME.

What You Will Do:

As a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) specializing in NDT/NDE, you will guide metals technicians on intricate projects that demand advanced testing expertise. You will oversee other technicians on assignments, make technical decisions related to project timelines, and carry out laboratory and metals testing tasks with minimal oversight. Your role will involve fieldwork, which may include safely ascending steel structures like buildings, cell towers, and water tanks to heights over 200 feet, using fall protection gear and personal fall arrest systems.

  • Field Operations: You perform inspections and utilize non-destructive testing techniques to maintain high-quality standards. A large portion of your field inspection time is dedicated to non-destructive testing (NDT) activities, such as ultrasonic testing (UT) of welds and/or magnetic particle testing (MT) of welds.
  • Assignment Management: You coordinate testing assignments across various projects, ensuring each one succeeds.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Keep testing equipment operational and calibrated; this may involve managing field and lab equipment inventories, maintaining formal calibration records, and participating in quality system audits.
  • Comprehensive Reporting: You create detailed reports to effectively communicate your findings.

The position will require 50+ hour workweeks (during periods of peak workload), as well as off-shift and weekend work, as required. Experience in Safety, DDC, NDT, and Radiation Training, including the use of fall protection equipment and personal fall arrest systems, is a plus.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma/GED
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of NDT/NDE metals testing experience OR an associate degree in a closely related field
  • Certifications:
    • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
    • Achievement of ASNT Level II certification per ASNT-SNT-TC-1A in at least four methods
    • Additional industry-related certifications, a plus:
      • ICC certification in Building Inspections and/or Structural Steel Inspection
      • Level II for UT, PT, MT certifications

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:

  • Ability to climb heights over 200 feet
  • Working the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
