Job DescriptionPosition Summary

The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) Early Career Development Program (ECDP) at Colorado State University is hiring a Natural Resources Technician to support natural resource (NR) management activities at RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, England, a U.S. Air Force installation. The NR technician will provide support to the environmental staff at RAF Mildenhall, and 100% of the work will be conducted on U.S. military lands. They will be responsible for implementing and coordinating conservation and habitat management projects in support of Air Force environmental stewardship goals.

The Natural Resources Technician will assist with avian monitoring/surveys, vegetation surveys, sensitive species monitoring, invasive species monitoring, environmental education events, GIS, and various data management activities. Overall, this role requires a strong desire to expand field skills (biology, botany, forestry, rangeland, etc.). A successful candidate will have the ability to work both independently, and collaboratively with military personnel, contractors, and conservation partners.

Essential Job Duties:

Natural Resources - Avian surveys, vegetation surveys, vegetation management, bat surveys (acoustic monitoring), acoustic monitoring data analysis (Kaleidoscope Pro, SonoBat)

Outreach activities - supporting events such as Earth Day and the Summer Reading Program, as well as working with various partners. This often includes helping plan and deliver events, running booths, leading planting sessions, and occasionally showcasing live reptiles, insects, and similar educational materials.

Document management - QA/QC for correct file naming conventions, folder organization, public document search/retrieval, document scanning, document shredding.

** Qualified candidates must be eligible to work in the host country or region (England; NATO) under the Status of Forces Agreement. **

  • RAF Mildenhall is a US military installation in Suffolk, England. This installation hosts the 100th Refueling Wing. It is approximately 1,162 acres and hosts 3,100 personnel and 3,000 family members.

RAF Mildenhall's Natural Resources Program plays a critical role in sustaining mission readiness by protecting, managing, and enhancing the installation's diverse ecological resources. The Natural Resources team partners with local and federal agencies, conservation organizations, and land managers to ensure regulatory compliance and longterm ecosystem resilience. Through proactive management and interdisciplinary collaboration, RAF Mildenhall's Natural Resources Program ensures that military operations can be conducted safely and effectively while conserving the ecological health and sustainability of the installation's natural landscapes.

Furthermore, candidates are required at a minimum to complete a NACI/SF85 and successfully pass a federal background check to remain eligible for employment by CSU.   • Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license by the proposed start date.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • ELIGIBLE FOR EMPLOYMENT UNDER NATO STATUS OF FORCES AGREEMENT

  • Pursuing or completed bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, ecology, botany, ecosystem sciences, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 3 months of related experience (Biology, Ecology, Botany, Rangeland, Forestry,...,).

  • Familiarity with US military customs and courtesies.

  • Professional experience conducting avian and mammalian field surveys.

  • Basic geoprocessing and cartography using GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS) and database management tools.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completed bachelor's degree or higher in wildlife biology, ecology, botany, ecosystem sciences, or a related field.

  • Experience working or living on US military installations.

  • Experience working with state or federal environmental agencies (USFWS, USDA, NOAA, etc.).

  • Experience reviewing and understanding compliance documents for federal environmental regulations (e.g., ESA, NEPA, Sikes Act).
