What is a Nastran job?

A Nastran job typically refers to a role involving the use of MSC Nastran, a software for finite element analysis (FEA) used in engineering simulations. Professionals in this field analyze structural, thermal, and dynamic performance of designs in industries like aerospace, automotive, and civil engineering. Responsibilities often include running simulations, validating models, and optimizing designs for strength and efficiency. Strong knowledge of FEA principles, material properties, and software proficiency is essential for success in a Nastran-related job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Nastran position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nastran analyst or engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, with expertise in finite element analysis (FEA) and simulation methodologies. Proficiency in using MSC Nastran software, as well as familiarity with CAD tools and possibly certifications like Professional Engineer (PE), are often required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals exceed in collaborating with design teams and interpreting complex data. These abilities are crucial for ensuring accurate simulations, optimizing designs, and supporting engineering decisions in industries like automotive and aerospace.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working with Nastran software?

A professional working with Nastran software generally spends their day setting up and running finite element analyses, interpreting simulation results, and preparing technical reports for design and engineering teams. They collaborate closely with engineers and project managers to refine models and validate that designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards. Frequent tasks include meshing geometries, troubleshooting simulation errors, and participating in design reviews. This role provides a dynamic environment where critical problem-solving and continuous learning are valued, especially for those interested in advancing their simulation expertise.

Job description

This position is an opportunity for an engineer to join our BCP structural analysis team as a structural analyst. This global team is primarily US-based, but also has engineers in the UK and India.
You will be responsible for evaluating and developing heavy structures, including main frames, linkages, and undercarriages. You will use finite element analysis tools to develop components to meet structural goals of strength, stiffness, fatigue life and natural frequency while meeting manufacturing and cost constraints. You will work closely with design teams to develop new product and resolve field issues. Your work will include building, solving, and correlating finite element models, as well as supporting validation tests and processing test data. You will demonstrate a strong sense of urgency and determination to resolve issues while maintaining high quality standards.
Job Responsibilities and Duties:
• Building and running FEA models using NASTRAN, LS-Dyna, and Creo-Simulate. Typical projects will involve static linear and non-linear analysis solutions, with some dynamic impact analysis.
• Working with designers and contributing own ideas to develop efficient solutions to structural issues.
• Supporting validation testing with gage maps and data analysis.
• Correlation of FEA models to match test data.
• Working with analysis team to continually improve analysis efficiency and quality.
• Involving other engineers and technical resources to address detailed technical problems.
• Clearly communicating analysis results through verbal presentations and written reports.
Skills and Experience:
• Engineering bachelor's degree.
• Familiarity with FEA model building and results interpretation.
• Experience with weld/metal fatigue, dynamics, vibrations, modal testing, isolation systems, digital signal processing or fatigue is not necessary but is highly desired.
• Ability to understand detailed drawings and technical specifications.
• Good mechanical aptitude.
• Team player with the ability to interact positively with all functions and organisation levels.
• Self-starting, with a natural sense of urgency.
• Productive and able to manage own work.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Flexibility and ability to operate under pressure.
