Music Programming Manager information

What does a music programming manager do?

A Music Programming Manager is responsible for selecting, scheduling, and curating music content for radio stations, streaming platforms, or other media outlets. They analyze audience preferences, industry trends, and performance data to create playlists and ensure the music aligns with the brand or format. Additionally, they collaborate with artists, record labels, and other stakeholders to acquire new music and promote featured content. Their role is crucial in shaping the listening experience and keeping audiences engaged.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a music programming manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Music Programming Manager, you need a deep understanding of music trends, audience analysis, and experience in playlist curation, often supported by a degree in music, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with music scheduling software (such as RCS Selector or MusicMaster), data analytics platforms, and music licensing systems is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, creativity, and the ability to collaborate with artists, labels, and internal teams set top candidates apart. These skills ensure that music programming aligns with audience preferences, drives engagement, and supports organizational goals.

Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

How does a music programming manager collaborate with other departments to curate playlists and events?

A Music Programming Manager frequently works closely with marketing, artist relations, and data analytics teams to ensure playlists and events align with audience preferences and brand goals. They gather input from these departments to understand trends, promotional priorities, and user engagement metrics, which helps in selecting and scheduling music content. Effective collaboration ensures that programming decisions are both creative and strategic, resulting in engaging music experiences that support wider business objectives.

How you'll make an impact:

We have a terrific opportunity for a Senior Staff Technical Program Manager with a passion for delivering high-quality products while driving organizational clarity, alignment, and technical evolution in a complex, fast-paced environment.

In this role, you will operate as a department-level strategist and orchestrator, leading mission-critical, multi-year initiatives that span Mobile, Platform, and dependent systems. You will be accountable not only for delivery, but for shaping how large programs are planned, sequenced, communicated, and executed across the organization. Your leadership will influence engineering strategy, execution frameworks, and decision-making at the Director and VP level.

What you'll do

Own delivery of mission-critical, multi-year programs spanning multiple engineering organizations and technical domains

Define program strategy and execution, partnering closely with senior product and engineering leadership

Lead initiatives in highly ambiguous environments, establishing clarity, structure, and execution models

Anticipate, surface, and resolve systemic, cross-organizational risks and dependencies

Define and institutionalize org-wide program management frameworks, operating rhythms, and governance models

Remove structural blockers that impede execution across teams and domains

Shape architectural conversations by applying deep technical understanding to sequencing, trade-offs, and long-term platform implications

Drive executive-level communication, crafting concise, decision-ready narratives and scenario-based options

Mentor and coach Staff and Senior TPMs, raising the bar for execution excellence across the organization

Serve as a trusted advisor to Directors and VPs on delivery health, risk posture, and prioritization

What you'll need:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business Management, or equivalent practical experience

8+ years (or equivalent impact) leading complex, cross-organizational technical programs

Proven experience delivering and maintaining software at scale to millions of active users

Strong architectural literacy across multiple systems and platforms

Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders without direct authority

Experience defining execution frameworks and operating rhythms at organizational scale

Exceptional communication skills, including executive-level storytelling and decision framing

Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, ambiguous environments

Experience with automation and/or AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.

Must have legal right to work in the U.S.

At SiriusXM, we carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining compensation, including your background and experience. These considerations can cause your compensation to vary. We expect the base salary for this position to be in the range of $153,100 to $207,000 and will depend on your skills, qualifications, and experience. Additionally, this role might be eligible for discretionary short-term and long-term incentives. We encourage all interested candidates to apply.
