Middle School Music/Band Teacher
Position Overview
The Gorham School Department is seeking a passionate, student-centered Music Educator to serve as a Middle School Music/Band Teacher at Gorham Middle School. This position includes teaching general music to all sixth-grade students and directing the school's instrumental band program for students in grades 6-8.
The successful candidate will foster a positive, inclusive learning environment where students develop musical knowledge, performance skills, creativity, and an appreciation for music. The teacher will inspire students of varying ability levels and help cultivate a thriving band program that encourages participation, growth, and excellence.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver engaging standards-based music instruction for all sixth-grade students.
  • Develop students' understanding of music theory, music history, performance, composition, and appreciation.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Assess student progress and provide timely feedback to students and families.
  • Integrate technology and contemporary instructional practices into music education.
  • Direct beginning, intermediate, and advanced band ensembles.
  • Teach instrumental techniques, music literacy, rehearsal skills, and performance practices.
  • Prepare students for concerts, festivals, community performances, and other musical events.
  • Recruit and retain students in the band program.
  • Collaborate with elementary and high school music educators to support program continuity and growth.
  • Assist students with instrument selection, care, and maintenance.

Professional Responsibilities
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, administrators, and families.
  • Participate in grade-level, team, department, and school-wide initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate student records and communicate regularly with families.
  • Support the school's commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging.

  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Music Education or related field.
  • Valid Maine Department of Education Certification (or eligibility for certification).
  • Knowledge of instrumental music instruction and adolescent development.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred
  • Experience teaching middle school students.
  • Experience directing concert bands and preparing students for public performances.
  • Familiarity with standards-based instructional practices and assessment.
  • Experience integrating technology into music instruction.
