The Department of Medicine, specifically within the Cardiology Division, is in search of a distinguished leader in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology to take on the role of Director for the Advanced Heart Failure Program. This position offers a remarkable chance to lead and expand one of the nation’s most comprehensive advanced heart failure initiatives, significantly influencing clinical care, research, and education.

The ideal candidate will become part of a collaborative and highly skilled academic team. As the Director of Advanced Heart Failure, the selected individual will collaborate closely with our Surgical Directors overseeing Heart Failure, Heart Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support, as well as with the Medical Directors responsible for Heart Transplantation and Ventricular Assist Devices. An academic appointment at the level of Associate Professor or Professor is available, depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications.

• Heart Transplantation: Approximately 20 transplants annually (over 400 total), including heart-kidney transplants, with ongoing innovations such as DCD NRP protocols and heart preservation systems.
• LVAD Program: One of the largest in the United States, performing 65-85 implants per year and having completed over 1,000 durable implants to date; currently supporting nearly 280 patients.
• Surgical Team: Comprises three full-time cardiothoracic surgeons specializing in heart transplant and LVAD procedures.
• Clinical Infrastructure: Features 9.2 AHFT cardiologists, 12 outpatient Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), dedicated transplant registered nurses, and strong quality improvement, regulatory, and data management teams.
• Research Excellence: Backed by the Clinical Cardiovascular Research Center, the Clinical & Translational Science Institute, and the Aab Cardiovascular Research Institute.

• Lead a comprehensive advanced heart failure and transplant program in collaboration with surgical, critical care, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Oversee clinical operations in both inpatient and outpatient environments, including heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support (e.g., VADs).
• Enhance quality improvement initiatives, clinical protocols, and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Mentor and expand a dedicated team of cardiologists and advanced practice providers.
• Develop the ACGME-accredited Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship program.
• Promote clinical, translational, or outcomes-based research.
• Encourage collaboration across various specialties, including congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension.
• Contribute to the education and mentorship of trainees and medical students.

• M.D. degree or equivalent.
• Must secure a New York State Medical License before the start date.
• Eligible for a Faculty Appointment at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
• Must fulfill all credentialing requirements.
• Eligible for Board Certification in Cardiovascular Disease and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology.
• Post-offer drug screening and health assessment required.
• Compliance with University and New York State health regulations.

The Division of Cardiology consists of over 76 faculty members with expertise spanning general cardiology, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, imaging, heart failure, and cardio-oncology. The division supports four fellowship programs and features a newly established 22-bed Cardiac ICU and a 23-bed Advanced Heart Failure Unit. A cutting-edge cardiovascular tower is currently under construction and is expected to open in 2027.

Located in Rochester, New York, the University of Rochester serves as a quaternary referral medical center, receiving referrals from across the New York State region. It boasts state-of-the-art advanced imaging and intensive care unit facilities, supported by four catheterization labs and three electrophysiology labs. The division has a dedicated 22-bed Cardiac ICU staffed by a team of seven cardiac critical care intensivists and 20 advanced practice professionals providing round-the-clock coverage. Additionally, there is a specialized Advanced Heart Failure unit with 24/7 staffing by advanced practice professionals. A new cardiovascular tower is set to be completed by 2026.
