About WAY East Jackson 

 

WAY East Jackson is a dynamic blended learning community of high school youth seeking innovative, educational options. The primary aim of WAY East Jackson is to engage teenagers in learning, foster the desire and ability to develop into lifelong learners, achieve their high school diploma and ultimately to become contributors to society. 

 

Purpose of Job 

 

The Lab Mentor collaborates with the team leader to develop and implement learning lab activities for high school students. The Lab Mentor is responsible for ensuring that the local project conforms, in every aspect, to the WAY Program model as researched and designed. This is a part time position that has the potential to become full time as the WAY East Jackson program grows. 

 

Essential Skills Required 

 

Knowledge of and professional qualification in a secondary content area. 

 

Good online and in person communication using a range of multimedia. 

 

Ability to develop activities to ensure success for individual student/researchers. 

 

Broad educational experience. 

 

Excellent organizational skills. 

 

Ability to manage and work within a team. 

 

Experience communicating and networking with other professionals. 

 

Desirable Skills Required 

 

Mac literacy and some technical literacy. 

 

An understanding of issues surrounding young people's and their education. 

 

Presentation skills. 

 

Key Tasks 

 

Lab Mentors must be a Michigan certified teacher. 

 

Lab Mentors are to provide easily accessible topics of interest for students to explore that align to state content expectations. 

 

Lab Mentors are expected to produce work using a variety of media in a way that is aligned with student interests. 

 

Lab Mentors are expected to work collaboratively and in teams where appropriate. 

 

Lab Mentors must comply with directives pertaining to job performance and duties. 

 

Lab Mentors are required to be supportive and share their expertise with other Mentors & Experts/Teachers to help facilitate student learning. 

 

Actions 

 

Update, develop, and participate in learning communities. 

 

Facilitate learning through working with other mentors, teachers, and students. 

 

Attend curriculum meetings and training as required. 

 

Follow all reporting requirements. 

 

Keep up to date on their own, and other, subject areas.
