Position at New York City Transit

Title: Superintendent - Network Systems

Department: Subways

Authority: New York City Transit

$152,072 - UTLO - Grade D

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

This position is responsible for managing support staff for the repair, installation, testing, troubleshooting and maintenance of network equipment and services in support of NYCT' s 24/7 mission critical Fiber Optic network transmission system and fiber cable plant, including updating fiber cable records. Supporting the Asynchronous network services, including upgrade and migration of the same. Also including support of the SONET/ATM and COE transmission networks, including PSLAN and IP Services. Responsibilities include contract support and oversite, providing guidance on resolution of network failures; overseeing project implementations, supporting remedial and preventative maintenance and repair; support emergency response; supervise Technical Support staff; also plan and supervise short term and long-term work effort; monitor workforce productivity and ensure compliance with all NYCT mandated safety-training practices/procedures, including knowledge transfer and training for maintenance staff. The selected candidate will also serve as the duty manager when necessary, supporting and assisting other EMD groups and incidents as required, including regular on call support for on-duty supervisory staff off tour and weekends to facilitate the operation.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in Computer Science or a closely related field of study and eight (8) years of full-time related experience, of which five (5) years must have been in a managerial/supervisory capacity.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Familiarity with fiber network (ASYNC/SONET) knowledge of fiber optic cable testing and troubleshooting, network monitoring & fault identification, network protocols and topologies. TL1, including switching and routing.
  • Knowledge of high-speed fiber optic transmission technologies & equipment; including Nortel Legacy.
  • Fiber Transmission Equipment, CISCO, Fujitsu, CIENA etc.
  • Knowledge of Network Equipment Power Plants
  • Command Center Environment experience, using NMA or other network monitoring tools and applications, including ticket generating applications.
  • Certifications in varied switch and router specializations I.e., CCNA, CCNP, Fujitsu MEF/Carrier Ethernet Certification
  • Knowledge of NYCT safety rules and regulations, business practices and procedures.
  • Experience working in a union environment; familiarity with agency's disciplinary process.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal skills, and project management and PC skills including MS Windows Office suite.
