Position Summary
The Division of Physical Therapy in the Department of Health Sciences invites candidates for a 12-month, faculty position with eligibility for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor (Tenure Track or Tenured), or Full Professor (Tenured). We seek candidates with a strong foundation of physical therapy research and a demonstrated record of scholarly contributions in their area of expertise. This position is an exciting opportunity to join a top-tier, highly collegial program in an idyllic campus setting. The Division is a nationally recognized leader in Physical Therapy education and research, with both PhD and DPT programs ranked in the top 10 nationally.
We welcome applicants engaged in either basic or applied research who are committed to advancing the profession of physical therapy through research. Active extramural funding for research is strongly preferred. We are interested in recruiting a candidate with strong experience in team science, so qualifying roles on funded grants are not restricted to principal investigator.
Research faculty at UNC are responsible for:
  • Leading and advancing independent, externally funded research initiatives
  • Developing and submitting competitive grant proposals
  • Effectively managing sponsored projects
  • Maintaining sustained extramurally funded research projects

While the primary work effort of this position will be fulfilling an individual's research agenda, contributions to the teaching missions in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program and Human Movement Science PhD curriculum are expected. With a focus on research, this position also affords access to residencies (pediatric, orthopedic, neurologic), fellowships (NICU and Collegiate Division I sports), HMSC PhD students, and DPT students through teaching courses in their area of expertise, advising and mentoring. Additionally, there are many opportunities to contribute to our University, community, and profession in various roles.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • An academic doctoral degree in Physical Therapy (PhD, EdD, DSc), Movement Science, Health Services Research, Biomedical Engineering, or related field; 
  • Demonstrated excellence in research; 
  • Substantial history of extramural grant funding as principal investigator; and 
  • Willingness to contribute to the Division's missions as a part of our enthusiastic, supportive, and dedicated faculty.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Eligible for licensure as a physical therapist in North Carolina; 
  • Post-doctoral research training; and 
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in a graduate-level program.
