What is a motion graphics designer?

Motion Graphics Designers are creative professionals who use animation, visual effects, and graphic design to create engaging moving images for film, television, advertising, video games, and digital platforms. They combine artistic skills with technical software knowledge to design visual elements like animated logos, title sequences, explainer videos, and infographics. Their work helps communicate ideas, tell stories, or enhance the visual appeal of content by adding motion to otherwise static graphics. Motion Graphics Designers typically use tools such as Adobe After Effects, Cinema 4D, and Adobe Premiere Pro. They often collaborate with other designers, editors, and marketing teams to deliver visually compelling projects.

What does a motion graphics designer do?

Motion graphics designers use video and visual design to present an idea or story. Marketing campaigns, technical illustrations, computer graphics, and eLearning platforms all use motion graphics designers. A motion graphics designer's responsibilities are to create quality content that connects with the audience. In this role, you collaborate with a team to develop creative artwork and film animation viewed on handheld electronic devices, the internet, and TV. You may start your design by developing a storyboard, then create a series of graphics, editing and implementing images as you go. Before publication, you review your work and make adjustments as necessary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a motion graphics designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Motion Graphics Designer, you need strong graphic design abilities, animation techniques, and a solid understanding of visual storytelling, often supported by a degree in design, animation, or a related field. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, and Cinema 4D is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help designers collaborate with teams and deliver compelling content. These skills are crucial for producing visually engaging and technically sound motion graphics that meet client or project objectives.

How does a motion graphics designer typically collaborate with other creative professionals on a project?

Motion Graphics Designers frequently work alongside art directors, video editors, animators, and sound designers to bring visual concepts to life. Collaboration often involves participating in brainstorming sessions, sharing drafts for feedback, and integrating motion elements with live-action footage or static graphics. Clear communication and openness to constructive criticism are essential, as projects may go through several revisions before final approval. This team-based approach ensures the final product aligns with the project's vision and meets client expectations.

What is the difference between Motion Graphics Designer vs Video Editor?

Are motion graphics designers in demand?

Motion graphics designers are in demand across industries such as advertising, entertainment, and digital media, driven by the increasing need for engaging visual content. Skills in software like Adobe After Effects and a strong portfolio can improve job prospects, especially as companies prioritize multimedia marketing and branding efforts.

The average salary for a motion graphics designer varies by experience and location but typically ranges from $50,000 to $85,000 annually. Entry-level designers may earn less, while experienced professionals with strong skills in Adobe After Effects and Cinema 4D can earn higher salaries or freelance rates.

Job description

Graphic Designer

Alamo Heights United Methodist Church | San Antonio, TX | Full-Time

Who We Are

Alamo Heights United Methodist Church has been part of the San Antonio community for over a century. It's a congregation that takes its faith seriously and its responsibility to the people around it even more — the ones who've worshipped here for decades, the ones who walked through the doors for the first time last Sunday, the ones who aren't sure yet whether there's a place for them here at all, and the neighbors all across our city with whom we are blessed to share sacred space.

Our Communications Team carries that responsibility into every week. What we produce — whether a bulletin, a directional sign, a social post, a slide, or an outreach email — is often the first thing a person encounters before anyone has said a word to them. When done well, we see this work as a form of welcome and communal care.

The Role

We're hiring a full-time Graphic Designer to join that team. You'll work closely with our Communications and Discipleship Pastor and Communications Director, alongside a small team who care about the community they serve, the quality of what they make, and the reason they're doing it. This is a Monday–Friday position, with the option to work from home on Fridays.

The person we're looking for shares an understanding that design matters because it matters to the people it's for. It's clarity for someone trying to find their way in an unfamiliar building; it's a face in an image that looks like theirs; it's type legible enough for eyes that struggle; it's the difference between a person feeling like they belong here and quietly wondering if they do.

This is a role with real creative ownership and a genuine seat at the table in how we communicate who we are and who we're for. More than anything, this position is an opportunity to help build an authentic community at a time when it's needed more than ever.

What You'll Do

Day-to-day, you'll shape how our community sees and experiences this church across print, digital, and in-person touchpoints. That includes:

  • Designing graphics, layouts, slides, and illustrations that give our brand a consistent, recognizable visual voice
  • Creating original artwork each week for the Sunday bulletin
  • Building flexible digital templates that help individual ministries communicate well on their own, without starting from scratch each time
  • Partnering with the Communications and Discipleship Pastor and Communications Director on marketing strategy, campaigns, and milestones
  • Collaborating on social media content and email design
  • Keeping our website visually current and in step with our identity
  • Coordinating with Print Shop interns to maintain quality and consistency across printed materials
  • Fielding design requests from ministry leaders and staff across the organization — translating what people need into work that actually serves them

What We're Looking For

  • A degree in design, visual arts, or a related field — or, as an alternative to the traditional degree, hands-on experience that makes the same case
  • 2–4 years working across artistic media, with fluency in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Skill in both digital and hand-drawn illustration
  • A working command of typography, color theory, composition, and an understanding of ADA best practices and recommendations
  • The ability to take an abstract idea and make it feel grounded and alive on a page or screen
  • Awareness of where web, social, and digital design are heading
  • Comfortable working across departments — fielding requests, navigating internal systems, and turning what people need into design that works for them
  • Able to shift comfortably between project types and scales while keeping pace with deadlines
  • Openness to learning new platforms and tools as the work evolves

You'll Do Well Here If...

You think about who's on the other end of what you make. You know that a well-designed piece isn't just one that looks good, but one that reaches the person it was made for in a way they can receive it.

You notice when something is unclear, when someone might get lost, when a room full of different kinds of people isn't reflected in the imagery on the screen. And you do something about it.

You're a good listener. You ask the right questions, take time to understand what someone actually needs, and make the people you work with feel heard — whether they're on the communications team or coming to you from across the building with a request they're not quite sure how to articulate.

You're comfortable with direction but don't need to be managed. You take feedback well and give it the same way. You care about collaboration and the craft, and you want the people around you to as well.

On Creative Freedom and a Deliberate Choice About AI

We want to be upfront about something because we think it matters to the right person: we're looking for a human artist because we believe the work of reflecting the full breadth of a human community back to itself requires a human to do it.

You'll have genuine creative freedom here and the trust that comes with it. Generative AI graphic tools aren't part of our workflow by design, and we're looking for someone who finds that freeing rather than limiting.

Compensation & Benefits

This position carries a salary of $45,000–$48,000 annually, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Health savings account (HSA) and flexible spending account (FSA)
  • 401(k) with matching
  • Retirement plan
  • Paid time off and parental leave
  • Flexible schedule
  • Employee assistance program
  • Preschool tuition discount for families enrolled in AHUMC's preschool program

Come As You Are

AHUMC is a community that invests in the people who work here. We're committed to an environment where diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives are valued, and we try to ensure those experiences are reflected across our teams, in the stories we tell, and in how we make decisions together.

If this sounds like the kind of work and community you've been looking for, we'd be glad to hear from you.

The position will remain posted until filled.

Company Description

Alamo Heights United Methodist Church has been part of the San Antonio community for over a century. At its core, AHUMC is a Christian community built around love, hope, and belonging for all people — not as a slogan, but as a lived commitment that shapes how the church operates every day.

Their values are grounded in five convictions: that every person is beloved, that scripture is best engaged in community and with context, that faith demands service, that humans are made for relationship, and that God's spirit is present and active in the world. These aren't theological abstractions. They translate into a church with multiple worship styles, deep care programming including a Wesley Nurse and The Hope Center, children and youth ministries, grief support, recovery programs, and an arts initiative built around community access. If someone doesn't feel welcomed at AHUMC, the church's stance is plain: that's our problem to fix.

The Communications team serves that mission every week — through the prints, the posts, the signage, the slides, and the art that people encounter before anyone has said a word to them. As a United Methodist congregation, AHUMC is part of a 12.6-million-member global denomination with a long tradition of converting faith into tangible action and social engagement. Working here means contributing to something that genuinely matters in people's lives — in San Antonio and beyond.
