Job Description

General Summary Of Duties:

Plan, schedule and coordinate operations, repairs and maintenance of all equipment, systems, buildings, grounds to support guest functions and services efficiently and safely. Accomplishing all the above while controlling energy, labor and material costs. Organize the Engineering Department and ensure smooth functioning of department & meet project completion dates. 

Role and Responsibilities: (Includes but is not limited to the following)

  • Organize Engineering department. 
  • Including selection of supervisory personnel, performance standards and job functions for general maintenance and coordination of shop and field activities in compliance to projects.
  • Control the application of direct and indirect maintenance costs, budgets, departmental and units costs. 
  • Supervise preparation of projects for complex rearrangement, replacement, and addition, including estimates, drawings, design, schedules, bills of materials, cost summaries, equipment and material specifications.
  • Promote and approve all training programs. 
  • Interpret all management policies of hotel to promote sound labor-management relations.
  • Promote an effective safety program designed to ensure safe working conditions.
  • Approve all orders covering project work including time and material expenditures.  Review the status of projects to ascertain cost overruns of underruns.
  • Promote standardization programs for better job practices. 
  • Actively support and initiate programs for the improvement of methods and the reduction of costs. 
  • Review reports for all emergency jobs with supervisors, plant engineers and scheduling supervisors to promote possible improvements.
  • Monitor all projects to ensure completion in a timely manner and within compliance. 
Qualifications

Performance Requirements: (Knowledge, skills and abilities)

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language to communicate verbally/in writing and prepare complex reports forecast, budgets and energy consumption.
  • Ability to effectively deal with internal/external customers, some of whom will require patience, tact and diplomacy to defuse anger, collect accurate information and solve customer concerns.
  • Ability to act independently while analyzing data and drawing conclusions from written and computer generated materials.
  • Remain calm and alert, especially during emergency situations and/or heavy hotel activity, serving as a role model for other employees.  Make decisions and take action based on previous experience and good judgment, sometimes revising procedures to accommodate unusual situations.  Authorize revenue allowances to remedy problems only after other alternative solutions have been offered.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to provide clear direction to staff.  Assign and instruct staff in details of work.  Observe performance and encourage improvement.  Monitor workload and make staffing adjustments accordingly.
  • Knowledge of mechanics, electrical systems and plumbing sufficient to maintain and manage engineering department.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language in order to complete all aspects of Engineering Operations and communicate, verbally and in writing, with subordinates staff, management and guests.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language to provide clear direction, instruction and guidance to subordinates.
  • Answer the multi-line telephone and provide information as needed.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language to follow written and/or verbal instructions from management, employees and guests.
  • Mathematical skills necessary to complete budgets, forecasts, energy consumption.
  • Ability to operate personal computer, typewriter, meters/gauges, camera, audio visual, telephone, calculators and photo copier. 
  • Ability to grasp, bend, stoop, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl lift and/or carry, supplies/equipment weighing a maximum of 50 lbs. to a height of 6 feet on an intermittent basis.
  • Ability to move and work throughout the Hotel for the duration of the shift.
  • Ability to walk/stand and work 60% of shift walking a maximum of 10 miles.
  • Ability to sit and work 40% of shift.
  • Ability to remain alert throughout the duration of shift and remain calm during emergency situations.
  • Ability to climb ladders/stairs to access work areas.
  • Ability to work in unfavorable conditions which can occasionally be hot, cold, noisy and wet.
  • Ability to access and input information using a moderately complex computer system.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work, meet deadlines, work with minimal supervision/multiple interruptions, exercise judgment and adapt instructions/directions from one assignment to another.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and implement control over the performance of subordinates.
  • Schedule staff so that proper coverage is maintained while keeping payroll costs in line.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language in emergency situations and to read caution and/or safety notices.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language to comprehend product labeling instructions to enable the safe application of products and processes.
  • Respond to guest inquiries/concerns.  Provide guest satisfaction through assistance, direction and information within hotel guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Engineering operations, to include appropriate staffing levels, service equipment and guest relations.
  • Supervise all staff including training, counseling and discipline.
  • Ability to deal with a number of problems requiring initiative and good judgment.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies needed to perform job function.
  • Ability to maintain attendance in conformance with standards.
  • Ability to maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance.

Additional Information
  • Current and / or previous union management position – 2 yrs minimum
  • Extensive Central plant experience to include Chillers, boilers, airhandler, cooling towers, Heat exchangers,
  • Chief Engineer shall be in charge of the Operations and Maintenance in the plant.
