What are Monadnocks?

Monadnocks are isolated hills or small mountains that rise abruptly from a gently sloping or virtually level surrounding plain. They are formed through long-term erosion, where softer surrounding rocks wear away, leaving more resistant rock standing alone. The term 'monadnock' originated from Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire, which is a well-known example of this geological feature. Monadnocks are important as they often serve as landmarks and can support unique plant and animal communities due to their distinct environments.
