What Does a Data Modeler Do?

A data modeler builds an organizational structure for a company’s data. As a data modeler, your primary responsibility is database design. Following directives from business leaders, your focus may be reducing data redundancy, improving data migration, or facilitating data retrieval. Collaboration with data architects and other data modelers is a regular aspect of your job as the team works to create physical, logical, and conceptual data models that help achieve business objectives. Your ability to translate raw data into actionable information is of great value to large corporations.

What is the difference between Modeler vs Data Analyst?

AspectModelerData Analyst
Required CredentialsDegree in mathematics, statistics, or related field; certifications in modeling softwareDegree in statistics, data science, or related; certifications in data analysis tools
Work EnvironmentFinancial, insurance, or engineering firms focusing on creating modelsBusiness, marketing, or finance sectors analyzing data trends
Employer & Industry UsageUsed for risk assessment, financial forecasting, and simulationUsed for reporting, data visualization, and insights generation

Modelers focus on developing mathematical and statistical models to predict and simulate scenarios, often working with complex software. Data Analysts interpret data, generate reports, and provide actionable insights. While both roles require strong analytical skills and familiarity with data tools, Modelers typically work on building predictive models, whereas Data Analysts focus on analyzing and visualizing data to inform decisions.

How do modelers typically collaborate with other team members during a project?

Modelers work closely with designers, animators, and technical directors to ensure that 3D assets meet both artistic and technical requirements. Regular meetings and feedback sessions help align the model's style and functionality with the project's vision. Modelers often iterate on their work based on input from other departments, making strong communication and adaptability key to success in this role. The collaborative environment fosters learning and can lead to new opportunities in areas such as texturing or animation.

What does a modeler do?

A modeler creates digital or physical representations of objects, environments, or systems used in industries like gaming, film, engineering, or architecture. They use specialized software such as AutoCAD, Blender, or Maya and often need skills in design, mathematics, and attention to detail. Modelers may also collaborate with other professionals to ensure accuracy and functionality of their models.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A modeler, particularly in fields like 3D modeling, animation, or CAD design, can earn $10,000 or more per month with significant experience and specialized skills. High-paying opportunities often require proficiency in industry-standard software, a strong portfolio, and sometimes certifications, but they do not always require a formal degree.

What are modelers and what do they do?

Modelers are professionals who create representations of objects, systems, or concepts, often using specialized software. Their work can involve building physical models for engineering, architecture, or science, or developing digital models for industries like animation, gaming, finance, or data analysis. Modelers use their technical skills to simulate real-world behaviors, visualize ideas, and support decision-making. Their specific responsibilities depend on the industry but generally involve detailed design, analysis, and collaboration with other specialists.

Is modelling a high paying job?

Modeling can be a high-paying career for top professionals, especially those who work with major brands, have strong portfolios, and gain significant experience. However, income varies widely based on factors such as market, experience, location, and the type of modeling (e.g., fashion, commercial, runway). Many models also face inconsistent work and competition, which can impact earnings.

What jobs in the US pay 300,000 a year?

For a Modeler, high-paying roles typically exist in specialized fields such as financial modeling, data science, or software development, where senior or lead positions can reach or exceed $300,000 annually. These roles often require advanced skills, extensive experience, and sometimes certifications, and may involve working in industries like finance, technology, or consulting. Compensation varies based on location, company size, and individual expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Modeler, you need strong mathematical and analytical abilities, experience with data analysis, and typically a degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency with modeling software such as MATLAB, SAS, R, Python, and familiarity with database systems are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication help modelers translate complex data insights into actionable recommendations. These skills are crucial for developing accurate models that inform business decisions and drive organizational success.

Job description

Hill International is seeking a BIM Modeler in Berkeley, California

Hill is seeking an experienced Building Information Modeling (BIM) Modeler / Revit Drafter to support the development, integration, and maintenance of Autodesk Revit-based facility models for complex technical and research environments. This role will support the Advanced Light Source Upgrade project and related facility modeling needs by helping consolidate existing design information, field-verified conditions, legacy documentation, and consultant-provided models into a coordinated BIM environment.

This is an opportunity to support a highly technical project involving complex building systems, accelerator infrastructure, research facilities, and integrated engineering workflows. The selected candidate will work closely with engineers, designers, project stakeholders, and external partners to create accurate, structured, and usable BIM content that supports design coordination, construction planning, installation readiness, and long-term facility documentation.

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Drafting, Design Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Minimum of 2 to 5 years of professional experience working with Autodesk Revit in a BIM environment.
  • Experience developing, maintaining, and updating coordinated BIM models for building systems.
  • Experience working with 3D point clouds, laser scans, or scan-to-BIM workflows.
  • Experience producing 2D drawings, schematics, and documentation from BIM models.
  • Experience performing or supporting clash detection and design coordination workflows.
  • Experience working with integrated building systems, such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical distribution, or related facility infrastructure.
  • Experience using AutoCAD or AutoCAD MEP and working with legacy drawing sets.
  • Ability to interpret incomplete, outdated, or uncertain documentation and translate it into structured model content.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to model accuracy, organization, and documentation quality.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with engineers, designers, project stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to document modeling assumptions, issues, and updates clearly.
  • Ability to manage assigned work, meet deadlines, and support project schedule needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working on complex technical, industrial, laboratory, accelerator, or research facilities.
  • Experience with Autodesk Construction Cloud, including model coordination workflows.
  • Familiarity with multi-platform coordination environments involving Revit, CAD-based systems, and parametric design tools.
  • Experience with Creo Parametric or coordination with mechanical design models and drawings.
  • Experience developing or maintaining as-built or facility models intended for long-term operational use.
  • Experience supporting construction coordination, installation planning, or field verification activities.
  • Familiarity with model standards, BIM execution plans, naming conventions, and model quality-control practices.
  • Experience coordinating models across architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and specialized technical systems.
  • Experience supporting design teams in high-configuration-control or highly technical environments.
