Model Based Design Engineer information

What is a model based design engineer?

Model Based Design Engineers are professionals who use mathematical and visual modeling techniques to design, simulate, and validate complex engineering systems. They typically work with tools like MATLAB/Simulink to create virtual prototypes, test control algorithms, and reduce the need for physical prototypes. This approach helps speed up the development process, improve accuracy, and lower costs, especially in industries like automotive, aerospace, and electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a model based design engineer?

To thrive as a Model Based Design Engineer, you need a strong background in control theory, embedded systems, and proficiency in modeling and simulation, typically supported by an engineering degree. Expertise with tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and experience with software version control systems are commonly required, along with relevant certifications like MATLAB certification. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in translating real-world requirements into accurate models and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure efficient development and validation of complex systems, minimizing errors and reducing development time.

What are some common challenges model based design engineers face when integrating models into existing embedded systems?

Model Based Design Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating simulation models into legacy embedded systems, as these systems may have hardware or software constraints not accounted for in the initial model. Ensuring model fidelity while optimizing for real-time performance and memory usage requires careful design and iterative testing. Collaboration with firmware and hardware teams is crucial to address compatibility issues and streamline deployment. Adopting standardized modeling practices and maintaining clear documentation can help mitigate integration risks and facilitate smoother handoffs between teams.

What is the difference between Model Based Design Engineer vs Simulation Engineer?

AspectModel Based Design EngineerSimulation Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, certifications in MATLAB/SimulinkBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, experience with simulation tools
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, software development, automotive/ aerospace industriesResearch labs, testing environments, aerospace/automotive sectors
Industry UsageDevelops models for control systems, embedded softwareCreates simulations to test systems, validate designs

The main difference is that Model Based Design Engineers focus on creating and implementing models for system development, often using tools like MATLAB/Simulink, while Simulation Engineers primarily develop and run simulations to validate and test these models or systems. Both roles require strong technical skills and often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in focus and application.

The Boeing Company
The Boeing Test Operations and Engineering (TO&E) team in Berkeley, MO is seeking an Associate Mechanical Systems Design & Analysis Engineer to join our Instrumentation Installation Design group supporting flight test programs.
In this team, a design engineer has the primary responsibility for the synthesis of requirements, creation of engineering definition, 3D models, 2D drawings, and model-based definition that define the mechanical hardware required to install a flight test data system. Flight test hardware is frequently located throughout the aircraft giving an employee a chance to get familiar with different areas of the platform.
Instrumentation installation designers work the entire design cycle including support of requirement definition, layouts, coordination with electrical designers, preliminary design review, engineering release, coordination with manufacturing engineers and suppliers, occasional shipside support, and change incorporation.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Incorporation of instrumentation into mechanical designs, including model-based wire routing
  • Design detailed mechanical components such as shelves, equipment trays, wiring clips, brackets, sensor mounts and specialized test mechanisms
  • Development of mechanical design criteria from customer test objectives/specifications
  • Support the development, maintenance or modification of system designs/proposals to provide design documentation and high-level requirements to downstream users/customers
  • Work closely with manufacturing engineers on producibility and procurement
  • Support the mod team during installation with engineering revisions and sometimes support shipside, whether that modification is along the assembly line in Saint Louis, a remote site in the US like an Air Force base, or even sometimes internationally
  • Support all the Saint Louis production programs (F-47, F-15, F/A-18, T-7A, MQ-25A, Weapons) and team members will work across those platforms
  • Support team in performing spatial integration at system or component level and modification of mechanisms/landing gear/ordinance systems
  • Assist in preparing technical documents for mechanical components and systems
  • Perform system tests to verify operational and functional requirements
  • Assist in monitoring suppliers' performance to ensure compliance with requirements
  • Support resolution of product integration issues and production anomalies
  • Research basic technologies for potential application to company business needs

Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (with a focus on Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace Aeronautical or Material Sciences)
  • Experience in mechanical design
  • Experience with a design tool (CAD package) like Siemens NX, CATIA, etc.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • An active U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • 2+ years of experience in Mechanical Systems design
  • 1+ years of experience in Test and Evaluation
  • Knowledge of machine shop fabrication capabilities including conventional & CNC machining, drilling, lathe, fit/finish tools & processes, and inspection/check-out
  • Knowledge/familiarity with additive manufacturing processes & tools
  • Understanding of material properties and mechanical statics & dynamics (structural design)
  • Understanding of structural dynamics, fluid flow, and thermodynamics theory & application
