Work EnvironmentFast-paced, collaborative, cross-functional teamsTeam-oriented, Agile environment
CertificationsOptional, but relevant certifications preferredNot typically required

The main difference between a Senior Slack Software Engineer and a Slack Software Engineer lies in experience, responsibilities, and leadership roles. Senior engineers typically lead projects and mentor others, while Slack Software Engineers focus on developing and maintaining features. Both roles work in collaborative, fast-paced environments within the tech industry.

How does a Senior Slack Software Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during feature development?

As a Senior Slack Software Engineer, you will frequently collaborate with product managers, designers, and quality assurance teams throughout the product development lifecycle. This collaboration often includes participating in planning meetings, providing technical input during design discussions, and ensuring alignment on feature requirements and timelines. You’ll also mentor junior engineers and facilitate code reviews to maintain high-quality standards. Strong communication skills and a proactive approach are essential, as you’ll often bridge the gap between technical implementation and user-facing features.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Slack Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Slack Software Engineer, you need advanced programming skills (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), a deep understanding of software architecture, and experience with scalable, distributed systems, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise in Slack’s API, cloud platforms (like AWS or GCP), CI/CD pipelines, and version control systems (such as Git) is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, leadership, and effective communication help you collaborate across teams and mentor junior engineers. These skills ensure the development of reliable, innovative solutions that enhance Slack's platform while supporting team growth and efficient project delivery.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Agents based in Netherlands.

As a Senior Software Engineer specializing in AI agents, you will help build the next generation of intelligent developer tools designed to simplify complex technical workflows and deliver actionable insights. You will create the foundational infrastructure behind AI-powered assistants, including orchestration systems, tool execution frameworks, context management, evaluation pipelines, and reliability layers. Working in a remote-first engineering environment, you will have the opportunity to shape an emerging AI product from an early stage while solving challenging backend and machine learning problems. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys ambiguity, takes ownership, and wants to build systems that can scale to support thousands of users and complex real-world interactions.

Accountabilities
  • Design and build the core infrastructure powering AI agent capabilities, including orchestration, tool execution, context management, evaluation systems, and trust frameworks.
  • Develop reliable, secure, and observable backend systems that enable AI assistants to interact with data, applications, and developer workflows.
  • Create and improve agent-based features that help users analyze information, understand performance, troubleshoot issues, and make better decisions.
  • Build systems around large language models, including tool usage, structured outputs, context handling, evaluation processes, and agent workflows.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to define architecture, identify technical challenges, and establish scalable solutions for an evolving AI platform.
  • Improve system reliability, performance, and usability by identifying gaps, investigating issues, and implementing meaningful improvements.
  • Contribute to technical discussions, code reviews, architecture decisions, and engineering best practices.
  • Take ownership of projects from concept to delivery while working independently in a fast-moving product environment.
  • Support knowledge sharing and mentor other engineers as the team and platform continue to grow.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience building and shipping production software systems.
  • Hands-on experience developing applications with large language models, beyond basic prompting, including agent workflows, tool integration, structured outputs, context management, orchestration, or evaluation.
  • Strong backend engineering fundamentals with experience designing reliable, scalable, secure, and observable systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in ambiguous environments where architecture and product direction are continuously evolving.
  • Self-driven approach with the ability to identify opportunities, define solutions, and deliver projects independently.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially within remote and distributed engineering teams.
  • Experience with AI platforms and tools such as OpenAI or Anthropic APIs is a plus.
  • Previous experience building AI agents, conversational interfaces, Slack integrations, or developer-focused tools is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with evaluation and observability frameworks such as Langfuse or LangChain is a plus.
  • Knowledge of subscription business models, mobile applications, app stores, or developer platforms is beneficial.
  • Contributions to open-source AI or machine learning projects are considered an advantage.
Benefits
  • Fully remote and flexible working environment.
  • Competitive compensation package with equity opportunities.
  • Long-term equity support with an extended exercise window for vested options.
  • 4-5 weeks of recommended annual time off to support mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
  • Workspace setup budget to help create an effective remote working environment.
  • Annual learning and development budget to support continuous growth.
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI technology with significant product impact.
  • Collaborative international engineering culture with experienced technical teams.
  • Opportunity to shape AI-native products and influence the future of intelligent developer tools.
