The Emory Healthcare Medical Laboratories team is composed of highly trained professionals who deliver accurate and timely results essential for informed medical decisions. Their expertise extends across Emory' Healthcare's network of hospitals and clinics, offering comprehensive laboratory support that ensures every patient-whether in a bustling urban hospital or a community-based clinic-receives diagnostic services of the highest standard.
OVERVIEW:
  • Directs, manages, coordinates and monitors activities and operations related to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine including management of staff and assigned projects.
  • Develops and implements strategic goals and objectives. Performs other related duties as required.
  • Assists in developing departmental short and long term goals and objectives.
  • Meets with other staff members to discuss progress and to develop future courses of action.
  • Analyzes departmental strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and constraints.
  • Assists in establishing, revising, administering and communicating policies, procedures and related forms in accordance with state, federal, and organizational guidelines.
  • Communicates and monitors compliance with regulatory, licensing and accreditation standards.
  • Manages staff and employee performance.
  • Resolves Human Resource-related issues, determines staffing needs, interviews and hires staff.
  • Provides on-going performance feedback, addresses problems, orients and trains employees, verifies and documents competency and identifies and suggests ways to develop skills.
  • Determines disciplinary, termination and salary actions.
  • Monitors and directs workflow; observes and reviews work produced by staff.
  • Submits employee information, Human Resources Action Form, job descriptions, employment requisitions and other information for the department.
  • Reviews and updates job descriptions for departmental personnel as necessary.
  • Directs chief technologists and supervisors in administrative duties and personnel management to ensure standardization of personnel policies, adherence to University Affirmative Action Plans, and salary and wage administration.
  • Monitors and re-directs activities as necessary to maintain levels of productivity.
  • Directs Quality Assurance activities to ensure laboratory compliance with the certifying agencies regulations.
  • Participates in the orientation program for new employees to ensure an accurate overview of the department and that adequate training is received in accordance with established standards.
  • Participates in the development of continuing education programs for staff; ensures leading edge technology and professional growth.
  • Serves as liaison with other organizational administrators to coordinate services, obtain information, and share ideas for the provision of quality services.
  • Serves on or chairs committees as appropriate.
  • Plans, administers and monitors the departments capital equipment, operations, and personnel budgets; regularly reviews year to date expenditures; and takes corrective action as necessary.
  • Coordinates preparation of annual budget; projects FTEs, salary expenses, supply expenses and revenues.
  • Oversees department test fee schedule, coding and reimbursement.
  • Coordinates billing/revenue procedures with laboratory's information systems and hospital accounting.
  • In compliance with applicable regulations, directs data collection, storage, analysis, and operational and statistical reporting activities of the department for management and regulatory agencies and as required for laboratory certification.
  • Compiles and analyzes data and reviews completed reports.
  • Oversees preparation of benchmarking reports and other statistical reports.
  • Maintains accurate records and procedures manuals, record storage, and appropriate reports for inspections including the results of proficiency testing.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A bachelor's degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical, biological science or related field is required.
  • Master's degree in Business or Healthcare Administration is preferred.
  • Certification by one of the following accreditation agencies: MT (ASCP), or categorical MLS (ASCP), MT (HEW), MT (HHS), MT (AMT), MT (NCA), HTL (ASCP) OR 5 yrs. of direct laboratory management .
  • Six years of medical technology experience which must include five years in a supervisory capacity preferred.

This position requires up to 50% travel based on business needs.
