What is a mitigation specialist?

Mitigation specialists are professionals who gather and present information about a defendant's background, character, and circumstances to help courts or legal teams make informed decisions, particularly in criminal cases. Their work often involves investigating factors such as mental health, family history, and life experiences that may have contributed to a person's actions. This information is crucial in sentencing phases, especially in death penalty or serious felony cases, as it can influence the court to consider alternatives to the most severe punishments. Mitigation specialists collaborate closely with attorneys, mental health experts, and social workers to build comprehensive life histories for their clients.

What are some common challenges faced by mitigation specialists when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Mitigation specialists often collaborate with attorneys, social workers, and investigators to develop comprehensive case strategies. One of the main challenges is ensuring effective communication among team members with diverse professional backgrounds, which requires strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Additionally, managing sensitive client information and balancing multiple caseloads can be demanding. However, successful mitigation specialists find that building trust and maintaining clear, consistent communication helps foster a supportive team environment and leads to better case outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mitigation specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mitigation Specialist, you generally need a background in social work, psychology, or criminal justice, often with a relevant degree and experience in casework or investigation. Familiarity with case management software, court filing systems, and research databases is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, empathy, and attention to detail help you build trust with clients and communicate effectively with legal teams. These skills are crucial for gathering comprehensive life histories, informing legal strategy, and advocating for clients in complex legal cases.

Job description

When a home is damaged by water or a fire disrupts a business, someone has to step in immediately and start the recovery process. That someone is you.
MITIGATION TECHNICIAN
Insurcomm Restoration Fortify Companies
Field-Based Full-Time Virginia Beach/Norfolk, VA
About Us
Insurcomm Restoration delivers complete restoration, reconstruction, and emergency response you can rely on when everything needs to go right. For more than 30 years, we have helped property owners, facility teams, and communities recover from fire, water, mold, storms, and environmental hazards.
As part of Fortify Companies, we are part of something bigger. Fortify's roots are in restoration-helping families and businesses recover when disaster strikes. But we're building something beyond recovery: a platform that aligns insurance carriers, property owners, and service providers across prevention, response, restoration, and rebuild.
We believe helping people rebuild after a loss is only half the job. Through our family of companies, we deliver coordinated care from prevention to restoration across 210+ markets nationwide, backed by Summit Partners. Our teams, technology, and local expertise come together so property owners and insurers get fewer losses, faster recoveries, and someone they can trust.
Our Brand Values

  • Showing up with a service heart: We help people move forward with empathy, respect, and unwavering commitment
  • Bringing the energy: We show up with urgency and a get-it-done mindset, owning every outcome
  • Predictability in the unpredictable: With standardized systems, we deliver consistency every time
  • Driving success together: By supporting one another, we strengthen relationships and drive results

About the Job
As a Mitigation Technician, you will provide emergency restoration services for families and businesses affected by fire, water, mold, sewer, and storm damage. You are on the front lines of recovery-stabilizing properties, preventing further damage, and delivering professional, compassionate service during stressful situations.
When it matters most, we show up with heart-and we need technicians who do the same.
What You'll Do
  • Respond to emergency mitigation calls and assess property damage caused by fire, water, mold, and weather-related events
  • Perform water extraction, structural drying, and mitigation services in accordance with IICRC standards
  • Remove and dispose of damaged building materials safely and efficiently
  • Decontaminate, clean, and deodorize affected interior spaces
  • Collaborate with the Contents Division to clean, pack, and store salvageable items
  • Document job progress through photos and detailed notes using PSA and other required software
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients, answering questions with empathy and respect
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site at all times
  • Properly set up, operate, clean, and store tools and equipment
  • Follow warehouse and vehicle protocols, including daily documentation of consumables and equipment use
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with project managers, crew chiefs, and team members

Ready to Join Us?
We are building the future of property protection, and we need dedicated mitigation technicians to help us get there. If you take pride in hands-on work, care about helping people during difficult times, and are ready to be part of a team that shows up when it matters most, we would love to hear from you.
