What is a mid manager?

Mid Managers, also known as middle managers, are professionals who oversee and coordinate the work of lower-level managers and employees while reporting to higher-level executives. They play a critical role in implementing organizational strategies, managing teams or departments, and ensuring that company goals are met efficiently. Mid Managers often serve as a bridge between upper management and operational staff, facilitating communication, managing resources, and monitoring performance. Their responsibilities can vary by industry but typically include planning, organizing, and leading within their area of expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid manager?

To thrive as a Mid Manager, you need strong leadership abilities, organizational skills, and a proven track record in team supervision, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Asana or Trello), budgeting software, and standard office suites is often required. Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and motivational skills help you manage teams effectively and drive results. These competencies ensure that you can bridge the gap between upper management and front-line staff, fostering productivity and achieving organizational goals.

What are some common challenges mid managers face when balancing team leadership and upper management expectations?

Mid managers often serve as the crucial link between frontline staff and upper leadership, which can create challenges in balancing the needs and expectations of both groups. They may need to communicate strategic directives from executives while also advocating for their team's capabilities and well-being. Navigating these dynamics requires strong communication, adaptability, and conflict-resolution skills. Additionally, mid managers are frequently responsible for driving team performance, managing resources, and fostering employee development, all while meeting organizational goals.

Job description

Are you a market strategist who promotes Emerging Market Mid-Market and Mid Corporate client growth through coordinated coverage and execution?
As an Emerging Middle Market and Mid Corporate Market Manager within the Commercial Bank, you will be accountable for market strategy, client growth, and end-to-end execution across a complex banking ecosystem-promoting coordinated coverage, market readiness, and disciplined performance management to meet our clients' needs.
Job responsibilities
  • Set and execute the market strategy across both Emerging Middle Market and Mid Corp segments, including growth priorities, industry focus areas, and coverage capacity planning.
  • Establish a strong operating cadence (pipeline reviews, deal/pricing governance, client prioritization, performance routines) and ensure transparent reporting of market health and outcomes.
  • Analyze and quantify market opportunity and client needs by segment (EMM vs. Mid Corp), translating insights into actionable priorities for coverage and solutions.
  • Gather and synthesize "voice of the client" and competitive intelligence via client engagement, roundtables, and industry participation; ensure market insights are reflected in go-to-market execution.
  • Partner closely with product, credit, risk, operations, and implementation teams to deliver an integrated client experience and ensure successful commercialization/adoption of solutions in-market.
  • Maintain a strong risk and controls culture, including timely issue escalation and adherence to applicable policies and procedures (e.g., KYC/AML, credit, documentation, and conduct).
  • Proactively communicate market developments, performance, and changes to internal stakeholders to ensure alignment and responsiveness across the organization.

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills
  • 10+ years of experience (or equivalent expertise) in Commercial Banking / Corporate Banking, with demonstrated leadership at senior levels.
  • Proven experience leading teams and influencing across functions to deliver outcomes at scale in a matrixed environment.
  • Strong understanding of middle market and mid-corporate client needs, including core banking solutions (e.g., lending, treasury/payments, deposits, FX, and partnering for capital markets/IB as applicable).
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and capture market growth opportunities, build/execute business plans, and deliver measurable results.
  • Executive-level communication skills with the ability to engage credibly with senior client executives and senior internal stakeholders.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and business judgment; ability to make sound decisions under ambiguity.
  • Strong negotiation, influencing, and collaboration skills to build productive internal and external relationships.

Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills
  • Direct experience with both Emerging Middle Market and Mid Corp coverage models, including segmentation, coverage deployment, and market-level governance.
  • Deep expertise in treasury and payments and how to drive adoption/penetration through coordinated coverage and go-to-market execution.
  • Experience developing market business cases and sizing opportunities (e.g., TAM, ROI, prioritization frameworks) to allocate resources effectively.
  • Strong analytical and presentation skills (e.g., Excel/PowerPoint); comfort leveraging data to drive decisions (advanced analytics a plus).
