What is the difference between Mid Level Web Developer vs Junior Web Developer?

AspectMid Level Web DeveloperJunior Web Developer

SkillsProficient in multiple programming languages, frameworks, and problem-solvingBasic understanding of web development, learning core skills
ResponsibilitiesDeveloping features, debugging, collaborating on projectsAssisting in tasks, learning codebases, basic coding

The main difference between a Mid Level Web Developer and a Junior Web Developer lies in experience, skill proficiency, and responsibilities. Mid Level Web Developers have more hands-on experience, can handle complex tasks independently, and contribute more significantly to projects. Junior Web Developers are still building foundational skills and typically work under supervision. Employers seek Mid Level Web Developers for their ability to contribute immediately, while Junior Web Developers are often entry-level candidates focused on learning and growth.

What are some common challenges faced by mid-level web developers, and how can they effectively overcome them?

Mid-level web developers often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple projects, adapting to rapidly evolving technologies, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams. To overcome these, it's helpful to prioritize tasks using project management tools, stay updated by participating in code reviews and learning sessions, and communicate clearly with designers, backend engineers, and stakeholders. Embracing continuous learning and seeking mentorship from senior developers can also support growth and help tackle complex problems more confidently.

What are Mid Level Web Developers?

Mid Level Web Developers are professionals with a few years of experience who design, build, and maintain websites and web applications. They possess strong knowledge of front-end and back-end technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and often server-side languages like Python, Ruby, or PHP. At this level, developers are expected to work independently on projects, contribute to architecture decisions, and sometimes mentor junior developers. They bridge the gap between entry-level and senior developers, taking on more responsibility and complex tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mid Level Web Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mid Level Web Developer, you need a solid grasp of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and at least one modern web framework, as well as a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, experience with APIs, and understanding of build tools or cloud platforms are typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you deliver robust solutions and collaborate with stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for building scalable, maintainable applications and contributing effectively to dynamic development teams.

Job description

The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking an electrical designer to join our power delivery team. In this hybrid role, you will support our engineering group on the detailed electrical design of various high voltage electrical facilities. Project responsibilities include drafting and design using CADD software, creating electrical drawings, and designing substation physical and/or renewable energy systems for renewable energy and high voltage electrical facilities. You'll collaborate with engineers and other designers, incorporating electrical information into drawings from other disciplines.
A successful person in this role is flexible, collaborative, and demonstrates strong initiative. The ideal candidate enjoys working both independently and as part of a team, communicates effectively, and adapts to changing schedules to meet deadlines and client needs.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: use AutoCAD and other CADD software to create detailed scaled electrical drawings for high voltage electric substations and transmission lines.

  • Interpersonal savvy: effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to align technical work with project objectives while fostering strong, productive working relationships.

About the opportunity

  • Hybrid: this position can be based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Duluth, or Hibbing, Minnesota; Ann Arbor or Grand Rapids, Michigan; Bismarck, North Dakota; Denver, Fort Collins, or Wheat Ridge, Colorado; or Salt Lake City, Utah, offices. A hybrid work arrangement may be considered, allowing time split between the office and a home office.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: two-year technical certificate or equivalent experience/coursework directly related to electrical design.

  • Experience: 5 years of relevant experience related to the job responsibilities described above.

  • Software: proficiency with current versions of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office software.

  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • 10+ years of experience working in a design capacity on projects directly related to the job responsibilities described above at a consulting engineering or industrial organization.

  • Ability to independently create drawings based on general direction.

Compensation: anticipated range of $30.50-$45.00 /hour. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as non-exempt (hourly) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
