What is a mid level PHP developer?

Mid Level PHP Developers are software professionals who have a few years of experience working with PHP, a popular server-side scripting language used primarily for web development. They are typically responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code, as well as collaborating with teams to develop dynamic websites and web applications. Mid level developers are expected to have a solid understanding of PHP frameworks, databases, and web technologies, and can work independently on moderately complex tasks while also mentoring junior team members. Their role bridges the gap between junior and senior developers, allowing them to take on more responsibility and contribute to project planning and architecture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid level PHP developer?

A Mid Level PHP Developer should have a solid understanding of PHP programming, web development fundamentals, and experience with frameworks like Laravel or Symfony, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with databases (such as MySQL), version control systems (like Git), and tools for debugging and testing is highly valued, along with knowledge of RESTful APIs. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating within development teams and delivering robust solutions. These abilities ensure the developer can efficiently build scalable applications, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges mid level PHP developers face when working on legacy codebases?

Mid Level PHP Developers often encounter challenges when working with legacy code, such as outdated frameworks, inconsistent coding standards, and limited documentation. These issues can make it difficult to implement new features or fix bugs efficiently, requiring developers to spend extra time understanding existing logic. Collaboration with senior developers and open communication with the team are critical to navigating these challenges and promoting gradual codebase improvements. Additionally, it's important to balance the need for refactoring with ongoing project deadlines.

Job description

As a Fullstack PHP Developer at Content & Coffee, you will contribute to the development and evolution of business-critical web applications for our clients. You combine strong backend expertise in PHP with solid frontend experience and actively contribute to architectural discussions, code quality and long-term maintainability.

Your experience enables you to operate comfortably in a consultancy context, translating business needs into robust technical solutions. You have a solid understanding of modern software delivery practices, including the growing role of AI in the software development lifecycle. While working hands-on, you are able to identify opportunities to improve development workflows, testing, quality assurance and delivery processes, and to proactively suggest improvements that create additional value for our customers.

Are you the Fullstack PHP Developer we are looking for? Find out with our checklist.

Are you the Full-Stack Developer we are looking for? Find out with our checklist:

Knowledge

  • Minimum 3 years of experience with at least 1 front-end and 1 backend framework that we use on a daily basis
  • Proven, handsโ€‘on experience as a fullstack PHP developer in professional environments (several years of relevant experience is required)
  • Strong knowledge of modern PHP and experience with at least one established framework such as Laravel, Symfony or similar
  • Thorough understanding of HTML, CSS and modern frontend best practices
  • Experience designing, building and consuming RESTful APIs and integrations
  • Strong familiarity with Git or similar version control systems.
  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices.
  • Good understanding of software architecture, code quality and maintainable application design.
  • Sound knowledge of modern Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) practices, including quality assurance, testing strategies and deployment workflows.
  • Awareness of how AIโ€‘driven tools and techniques can be applied within the SDLC (e.g. for code quality, testing, review or delivery optimisation), and the ability to assess where they can add value in realโ€‘world projects.

Mindset

  • You take ownership of your work and feel comfortable operating autonomously in complex environments.
  • You think beyond pure implementation and consider the broader impact of technical decisions on quality, maintainability and delivery.
  • You are comfortable working in an Agile environment and understand how development, testing and delivery fit together within the SDLC.
  • You have a consultancy mindset: you actively observe how teams work and can suggest pragmatic improvements when you see opportunities.
  • You are curious about new technologies and approaches, including the use of AI to improve software development practices.
  • You communicate clearly and constructively with both technical and nonโ€‘technical stakeholders.
  • You value collaboration, feedback and continuous improvement, without the need for formal authority or hierarchy.

Other

  • Dutch is your native language or you master it at an equivalent level.
  • You can communicate professionally in English as well.
  • You are willing to work onโ€‘site at customer locations when required.
  • You hold a valid driverโ€™s license (B).
Where youโ€™ll work

At Content & Coffee, we do things differently, we donโ€™t have a traditional office! Youโ€™ll mainly work from the comfort of your home and spend time at our clientsโ€™ locations. This means you can join us from anywhere in Flanders. Our flexible working model is designed to support your productivity and workโ€‘life balance, but also expects maturity and selfโ€‘organisation.

Sounds good? Then we would like to offer you:
  • A permanent contract with a competitive salary package, complemented with meal vouchers and hospitalisation insurance.
  • The opportunity to work on a variety of interesting and meaningful projects, each with its own technical and organisational context.
  • Exposure to different teams, domains and application landscapes, allowing you to broaden your experience and deepen your expertise over time.
  • A consultancy environment where quality, sustainability and longโ€‘term impact matter more than shortโ€‘term delivery.
  • The necessary tools to work comfortably.
  • Flexible working hours and a unlimited numbuer of vacation days, to support a healthy workโ€‘life balance.
  • Plenty of room for training, conferences and continuous personal growth.
  • A unique role within a selfโ€‘managing, growing organisation built on trust, ownership and responsibility.
  • A team culture where collaboration, feedback and technical excellence genuinely matter.
