Job Title: Interpreter and Translator: Video, Over-the-Phone, or In-person Services
Location: Remote or On-Site
Job Type: Independent Contractor
Services Modalities: Video Remote, Over-the-Phone or In-Person Interpretation
Universal Language Service welcomes Interpreters to provide language services in various settings including Healthcare, Social Services, Legal, Technical, and others.
We are looking for:
  • Linguists that have proven interpreting experience and have completed training and/or certification/qualification by recognized professional organizations.
  • Residents of Washington, Oregon, and/or Idaho who are eligible to work in the USA.
Position Overview: The Interpreter is responsible for facilitating communication for the Limited English Proficient (LEP) community and the practitioners that serve them in a variety of settings. This contract position is flexible and an opportunity to expand your interpreting business with access to many sessions/appointments per day.
Job Functions:
  • Provide effective interpreting sessions in a professional manner.
  • Always exhibit professional appearance and behavior, including punctuality and preparedness for sessions/interpreter services appointments.
  • Demonstrate the ability to adapt quickly to new and changing situations.
  • Adhere to interpreter ethical standards and procedural requirements specific to interpreting context.
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and working in a diverse environment.
  • Respect for and understanding of our Limited English Proficient (LEP) clients, culture, dialect and beliefs, and preferences.
  • Strong aptitude and passion for customer service and interpreting.
  • Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
  • Render exact and correct concepts and meanings according to interpreter protocol.
Qualifications:
  • Fluent and have strong verbal communication skills in both the source and target language (Target Language to English and vice-a-versa).
  • Excellent listening and retention skills to maintain a high level of accuracy during interpretation.
  • Successful completion of a proficiency assessment or have a National Certification.
  • Extensive knowledge of Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice (DSHS LTC - WA, ATA, IMIA, NBCMI, and NCIHC).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to read and write in the requested languages.
  • Degree or certifications in interpreting practices.
  • National Medical or Social Interpreter Certification, Qualification or Recognition by DSHS LTC, CCHI, NBCMI, ATA, or OR Health Authority.
  • Accredited Medical Interpreting Training course (i.e.: ALTA, MITS, Bridging the Gap, MiTio, Cross-Cultural training, 40-hour accredited medical courses).
  • Bilingual Individuals: referrals for Training and Language Assessment / Certification / Qualification or Recognition are provided.
