What is a mid level analyst?

Mid Level Analysts are professionals who collect, process, and interpret data to help organizations make informed decisions. They typically have a few years of experience and are responsible for conducting research, creating reports, and providing insights based on data analysis. Mid Level Analysts often collaborate with other teams to identify trends, solve business problems, and recommend solutions. Their role may also include mentoring junior analysts and supporting senior staff with more complex projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid level analyst?

A Mid Level Analyst typically requires strong analytical abilities, proficiency in data interpretation, and a relevant bachelor's degree in fields such as business, finance, or data science. Familiarity with data analysis tools like Excel, SQL, and business intelligence platforms, as well as experience with reporting software, is expected. Effective communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills are crucial soft skills for translating complex data into actionable insights. These competencies enable analysts to drive informed decision-making and add value to organizational strategy.

What are some common challenges faced by mid level analysts when transitioning from junior roles?

Mid Level Analysts often encounter new challenges as they move beyond entry-level tasks, such as managing more complex projects, handling larger datasets, and providing insights that influence business decisions. They are also expected to work more independently, prioritize multiple assignments, and communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Adapting to increased expectations for analytical rigor and developing leadership skills for mentoring junior team members are key aspects of growth at this stage.

Job Description:
Mid Level Data Analyst
Location: Merrifield, VA, Winchester, VA, or Pensacola, FL (Hybrid)
Role Overview
This mid-level Data Analyst will lead the remediation of a large data governance backlog, with a primary focus on identifying priority tables and developing the governance artifacts needed to make those tables understandable, trusted, and reusable. The successful candidate will combine SQL and analytical skills with disciplined project management and stakeholder communication. There may be an opportunity for the role to evolve into a business intelligence-oriented position based on performance.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the end-to-end remediation plan for a large data governance backlog, including intake, prioritization, status tracking, and risk identification.
  • Identify and prioritize key tables that require governance artifacts based on usage, business value, and reporting dependency.
  • Create, validate, and maintain data dictionaries, source-to-target mappings (STTM), critical data element (CDE) documentation, and related governance artifacts.
  • Use SQL to profile, validate, investigate, and document tables, fields, transformations, and business rules.
  • Partner with data governance teams to align deliverables with enterprise standards and artifact approval workflows.
  • Collaborate with internal analyst teams and subject matter experts to understand business processes and reporting dependencies.
  • Translate technical findings into clear updates for stakeholders, including progress summaries, blockers, and recommended next steps.
  • Support the democratization of clean, governed tables for broader enterprise use.
  • Develop and maintain reporting or dashboard views, preferably in Power BI, to visualize remediation progress.
  • Recommend improvements to documentation templates and governance processes to increase efficiency.
  • Ensure documentation is business-friendly, technically accurate, and usable by various audiences.
  • Contribute to analytics and business intelligence work as the backlog remediation matures.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience researching, compiling, documenting, and validating data, business processes, and data flows.
  • Advanced SQL skills to query large datasets, assess table structures, and investigate data quality issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex workstreams with multiple stakeholders and deadlines.
  • Experience creating or maintaining data dictionaries, metadata documentation, source-to-target mappings, or similar governance artifacts.
  • Working knowledge of data governance concepts, including metadata management, CDEs, data stewardship, and data quality.
  • Working knowledge of data warehousing concepts, database structures, and analytical data pipelines.
  • Communication skills to summarize technical findings for both technical and business audiences.
  • Experience with project tracking, issue management, status reporting, and documentation quality control.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Business Analytics, Data Analytics, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Power BI experience, including the ability to create dashboards that communicate project status and risk.
  • Experience applying data storytelling principles to generate insights from governed data.
  • Experience with Microsoft Purview or similar data catalog or governance platforms.
  • Experience supporting enterprise-wide data governance, reporting, or analytics initiatives.
  • Familiarity with semantic models, curated datasets, or self-service BI enablement.
  • PMP certification, Agile certification, or commensurate project management experience.
  • Advanced degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Business Analytics, Data Analytics, or a related field.
