Position Summary
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Microsoft Exchange Engineer to provide expert-level engineering, administration, and troubleshooting across complex Exchange on-premises, Exchange Online, and hybrid messaging environments. This role is critical due to the upcoming retirement of a senior SME, requiring immediate onboarding for knowledge transfer, documentation, and operational continuity.
The ideal candidate will function as the highest-tier technical escalation point, lead advanced incident resolution, and ensure secure, compliant messaging architecture. This position offers a contract-to-hire path and an opportunity to shape modernization strategies for enterprise messaging.
Key Responsibilities
Exchange Administration & Engineering
  • Design, configure, and maintain Exchange Server 2013/2016/2019 environments.
  • Manage Exchange Online configuration, scaling, and optimization.
  • Support and enhance Hybrid Exchange architectures (OAuth, hybrid mail flow, connectors, federation).
  • Administer and troubleshoot:
    • DAGs and database replication
    • Transport services and mail routing
    • Autodiscover, EWS, MAPI/HTTP, ActiveSync
    • Certificates, namespaces, and load balancing

Migration & Knowledge Transfer
  • Lead migrations from on-prem Exchange to Exchange Online (M365) via hybrid, cutover, staged, or third-party tools.
  • Conduct mailbox migrations, PST ingestion, public folder migrations, and identity sync tasks.
  • Document existing environment and processes for future reference.
  • Collaborate with retiring SME for seamless knowledge transfer.

Security, Compliance & Governance
  • Manage and optimize:
    • Exchange Online Protection (EOP)
    • Microsoft Defender for Office 365
    • Anti-spam/anti-malware policies
    • DLP and retention policies
  • Investigate email spoofing, phishing, and transport anomalies.

PowerShell & Automation
  • Develop and maintain advanced PowerShell scripts for automation, reporting, and health monitoring.
  • Build self-service capabilities where appropriate.

Monitoring & Troubleshooting
  • Serve as Tier 3 escalation for complex issues.
  • Troubleshoot hybrid mail flow, OAuth failures, Autodiscover issues, and performance anomalies.
  • Engage Microsoft Premier/Unified Support as needed.

Identity & Integration
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Azure AD Connect / cloud sync
    • Conditional Access
    • Authentication flows (Modern Auth, OAuth)
  • Understand downstream integrations (Teams, MDM, security tooling).

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • 7-10+ years administering Exchange on-prem and Exchange Online at enterprise scale.
  • Deep expertise in:
    • Exchange Server 2013/2016/2019
    • Exchange Online administration & PowerShell
    • Hybrid configuration (HCW), mail flow, connectors
    • DAG architecture and failover
    • SMTP routing and transport rules
  • Expert-level PowerShell scripting (complex modules, automation).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for mail flow, hybrid auth, DAG replication, DNS/cert issues.
  • Familiarity with tools like RCA, Message Trace, Service Health Dashboard.
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Microsoft certifications:
    • MS-203 (Messaging Administrator Associate)
    • AZ-104 (Azure Administrator)
    • Legacy MCSE/MCSA in messaging
  • Experience with:
    • Third-party migration tools (Quest, BitTitan)
    • Advanced M365 governance
    • Mobile device management (Intune, Workspace ONE)
    • Teams integration with Exchange Online
