What are MEP Interns?

MEP Interns are students or recent graduates who assist engineers and project managers in the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) fields within construction and building projects. Their responsibilities typically include supporting design, drafting, site inspections, and documentation under the supervision of experienced professionals. MEP Interns gain hands-on experience with building systems, learn industry-specific software, and help ensure that project specifications are met. This role is an entry point for those interested in a career in MEP engineering or construction management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MEP Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MEP Intern, you need a fundamental understanding of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, often supported by coursework in engineering or construction management. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and building information modeling (BIM) software is typically expected. Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns work well within multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for supporting project efficiency, learning industry standards, and contributing to successful project outcomes.

What types of projects and tasks can a MEP Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a MEP Intern, you will typically assist with drafting and updating mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings, conducting site visits, and supporting the review of construction documents. You may also help coordinate between different engineering disciplines, prepare equipment schedules, and participate in meetings with project teams. This hands-on experience is designed to familiarize you with industry standards, enhance your technical skills, and give you exposure to real-world project cycles in a collaborative team environment.
