What does a MEMS Design Engineer do?

A MEMS Design Engineer specializes in designing micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), which are tiny integrated devices that combine mechanical and electrical components. They work on developing sensors, actuators, and other micro-scale devices used in applications like automotive, healthcare, and consumer electronics. Their responsibilities include modeling, simulation, fabrication process development, and testing MEMS devices to ensure performance and reliability. They often use CAD tools, finite element analysis (FEA), and semiconductor manufacturing techniques to create functional designs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Mems Design Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mems Design Engineer, you need a strong background in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), physics, materials science, and electrical or mechanical engineering, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Proficiency with CAD tools, finite element analysis (FEA) software, and MEMS fabrication techniques is essential, alongside familiarity with industry standards and cleanroom protocols. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for successful collaboration across multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing reliable MEMS devices, ensuring manufacturability, and delivering innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by MEMS Design Engineers and how can they overcome them?

MEMS Design Engineers often face challenges related to miniaturization, device reliability, and integration with other electronics due to the complex and delicate nature of MEMS technology. Overcoming these issues typically involves rigorous simulation, iterative prototyping, and close collaboration with fabrication and testing teams to catch potential design flaws early. Staying up to date with the latest materials and manufacturing techniques can also help engineers address evolving requirements. Additionally, clear communication with cross-disciplinary colleagues ensures smooth transitions from design to production, increasing the likelihood of project success.

Job description

Founded in 2003, InvenSense Inc., a TDK Group Company, is the world's leading provider of MEMS sensor platforms. InvenSense's vision of Sensing Everythingโ„ข targets the consumer electronics and industrial markets with integrated Motion and Sound solutions. Our solutions combine MEMS (micro electrical mechanical systems) sensors, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, compasses, and microphones with proprietary algorithms and firmware that intelligently process, synthesize, and calibrate the output of sensors, maximizing performance and accuracy. InvenSense's motion tracking, audio and location platforms, and services can be found in many of the world's largest and most iconic brands including smartphones, tablets, wearables, drones, gaming devices, internet of things, automotive products, and remote controls for smart TVs.
InvenSense is headquartered in San Jose, CA and has offices in Boston, China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, France, Canada, Slovakia, and Italy. We're looking for top-notch Engineers to join our global team. If you're interested in being a part of our journey and helping us grow to become the leading provider of SoC platform solutions, we definitely want to hear from you.
Description (Responsibilities & Deliverables)
  • Design, implement and verify analog / mixed-signal IC designs for various motion sensor products.
  • Evaluate system-level trade-offs for next-generation sensor interfaces and identify IC architectures in collaboration with the MEMS design team to meet performance requirements.
  • Interface with digital design engineers to define and optimize sensor architectures and digital signal processing circuits.
  • Guide layout engineers on physical design. Review layouts and provide feedback for optimal layout design.
  • Tape-out designs on-schedule adhering to required specifications.
  • Evaluate and validate designs in the lab and identify any deviations from requirements and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform other duties and tasks (e.g.: RMA debug) that may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications
  • Minimum MSEE +8 Years or PhD EE +5 Years of industry experience in analog or mixed-signal CMOS circuit design.
  • Thorough understanding of analog and mixed signal systems and micro-architecture trade-offs. Demonstrated ability to develop micro-architectures and high level Matlab system models.
  • Proven track record of designing low-power, low-noise, precision switched-capacitor CMOS analog amplifier (OPAMP), or analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for high volume manufacturing.
